RE: Microsoft - XP vs 7

Now, if you will look at the context of my post, I believe you will find the implication that modern file systems don't need fragmentation like older ones do, and then a post that HFS+ needs to be defragged, implying that it in the latter category, when, in fact, it is in the former.
Tom
I recently did some defragging and found one laptop with XP which had never been defragged was 26% fragmented. It has a NTFS file system. My other laptop was 6% fragmented but I have occasionally defragged it, same OS and file system. I don't know how much of a problem fragmentation presents, but almost immediately after defragging there appears to be fragmentation, once files are used.

RE: Looking for hidden value

There are some semi-monocoque MH out there for not much money. Here is a Foretravel that will last a long time. The Foretravels in the 90's were not as heavy as the current ones and can get good MPG. The big trade-off is giving up a slide. Newer Foretravels offer a slide, but they resisted slides for a long time because of the semi-monocoque integrity.

RE: American Heritage Campground Williamsburg VA

A very nice campground. Free wi-fi and concrete pads. It is a large campground with trees. They gave us free fresh baked chocolate chip cookies when we arrived. There is a nice rec hall which our square dance club enjoyed. Very centrally located. BTW the Pottery Factory is now closed. After running down for decades only 1-2 shops were open last month. No doubt the land is now more valuable than the business.

RE: Silver Leaf Electronics

VMSpc has already saved me money when two codes registered. One was a intake manifold sensor reading high and another was an invalid throttle position sensor. In each case I fixed the problem at little or no cost with no need for a trip to a shop. Seeing a check engine light or shut down engine soon light gets my attention and if I did not know the cause I would be headed to a shop and $$$. If you don't need to read codes then VMSpc is there as insurance in case you do need it.

RE: pusher 30 to 34 ft

Here's a little more info with some pics on Tiffin's small class A to be called the Breeze. Breeze
Man, does that Breeze look short? The handling characteristics will be determined. The benefits of the shorter an lighter MH may be better MPG and lower cost to purchase. I can get about 12 MPG now on my 36' DP, 260 HP ISB. I can't see a reason to go smaller. BTW, if the Breeze is loaded down with luxury items its fuel economy and price advantage will suffer.

RE: Delorme Earthmate GPS w/Street Atlas 2008 $17.99!

The Earthmate LT-40 is a BIG improvement over the LT-20. The LT-40 is the first big performance improvement of DeLorme receivers in many years and it puts them on par with SIRF III chip receivers. The LT-20 works fine and I uses it or the USB Earthmate equivalent for years. My only complaint about them was that they were susceptible to interference which could occasionally cause loss of tracking which is a real problem when making a turn. The LT-40 is much faster on initial acquisition also. I keep my LT-20 as a backup. The offer for SA 2008 and LT-20 is fine if you are getting started.

RE: Super C vs DP

The biggest trick on a used Class C or Class A diesel is to find one well maintained. Diesels are great and reliable over many miles, but expensive it repairs are needed. In looking a while back I found service records to be rarely available. The next best thing is to do a very careful inspection and a good mechanic would be necessary. An oil analysis would help a lot. I would take a Class A over a Class C any day. I have a DP.

After posting you can look at your post and edit it within a limited time, maybe 30 minutes, and it will not show as being edited. That seems to be the preview function.

The monitoring functions appear to be very similar to VMSpc which is for diesels.

RE: How to break-in and hotwire a motorhome...

Just another reason to have a key hidden somewhere.
Ditto. A magnetic key holder fits on my Kwikee steps. I always use a horizontal surface for the magnetic holder just to be safe. I do have to remember just where I put it.

If you already have the Vue then Remco transmission pumps should allow you to tow it.

RE: Thetford Aqua-Magic IV Toilet

Plugging the overflow couldn't be easier. Just put plumbers putty in the hose. It requires removing to toilet for access. The ball valve is also easy and can be done when the toilet is removed. The Bravura looks like a nice replacement if you go that way. Since I considered replacing briefly I looked at the installation and two things occurred to me. First, the water inlet of the new toilet should be close to where the inlet of the the old toilet was, and the bolts positions should be the same. The water line in your MH is probably PEX and cannot be easily moved or modified. I would call Thetford and verify these things before upgrading. I felt that easy fixes to my original toilet were preferable to undertaking upgrading. With some foresight the upgrade may be a piece of cake. BTW plugging the overflow does stop odors.

RE: Engine coolant--Did I screw up?

I don't know the answer, but in a pinch distilled water can be added to the coolant with no problem. The only issue I can think of is if the two coolants might react and form a precipitate. It can happen with some coolants but I suspect you will be lucky. BTW what would the green coolant be? It sounds like Prestone for cars we have used for years. I have not seen a green coolant for diesels.

RE: Thetford Aqua-Magic IV Toilet

I have an Aqua Magic 2000 model and I developed a leak from the ball valve this season. My ball valve can be removed from the toilet by slipping (with difficulty) it off of a hose. I was prepared to replace the valve which would have cost about $30, but before buying the part I disassembled the valve and saw that there is an O ring shaft seal. I found an O ring in my large assortment and fixed the leak. I would say that replacing the toilet for less than $200 assuming you do the labor is not a bad deal either. BTW does your Aqua Magic have an overflow drain. Mine did and it leaked odors until I plugged it as recommended my Thetford. Newer Thetford toilets don't have an overflow drain.

RE: Cummins 5.9L DP Power? Towing Capabilities

I am one that says buy what you need and don't buy something you need to modify to get what you want. Towing more than 5,000 lbs will require that the MH has the rating to do so. A current thread here discusses shorter DPs. A 5.9 works best for shorter DPs and 35-36 should be the maximum length. For an example, I have a 260 HP 5.9 ISB, five speed Allison, and about 25,000 combined weight including my towed car and the combination is fine. I get good MPG with the smaller engine also.

RE: pusher 30 to 34 ft

One of the major benefits of a shorter DP is the much lighter weight and much greater MPG. I am getting between 11 and 12 MPG on my 36' DP, with about 25,000 lbs combined weight (includes my towed car). I have a 260 HP ISB and Allison 5 speed. There have been threads about downsizing and that can range down to a Winnebago View with a Sprinter chassis or Class B's. I feel that my short Class A is the best of both worlds. I would not gain that much MPG by greatly downsizing and I have many of the advantages of the really large MHs. If fuel prices increase in the future I will be very glad I don't get half the MPG I currently get. There are definitely trends in MHs. Not that many years ago a 34' MH was about as large as they got. In the last ten years or so they have grown much larger and now the 34' MH is considered small.

RE: Made winterizing a one person job

.... Where did you find the all metal version?
This:

is available here: http://winterizemanufacturing.com
Thanks. That is a slick part. Once again it proves that I learn something new every day about my MH.
