RE: Time of year to sell a motor home?

Spring. Which means that late fall is the best time to buy.

RE: 1991 454 TBI motorhome-rearend ratio?

The 60, 70, 80 etc. refers to the gear and center section size. Weight rating can vary for those gears depending on axle tubes, wheel bearings and brakes installed on that center section, but over 10,000lbs is probably an 80. I've got both 60 and 70 models rated at 7500lbs on Cummins Dodge P/Us.

RE: 1996 to 1999 Beavery Monterey or Safari suspension?

Many Safais of that vintage have the rubber springs. I have absolutely no use for those.

RE: could my ref be kicking the bucket? (dom RM 2800)

If you put foam insulation around it be careful to get non flammable. Urethane foams are highly flammable. I like then for many application, but around the fridge I'd put fiberglass back because it just won't burn.

RE: Tom-Tom GPS

We've been using DeLorme and Microsoft for 7 years now. Just ordered a Garmin 260W from Amazon for handier use in the cars. There are all sort of deals going in now for various GPS units. Figure out what size screen you want and what features you're after, then start looking. For MH use I'd still suggest DeLorme feeding a laptop as my favorite.

RE: 1991 454 TBI motorhome-rearend ratio?

4.56 and 5.10 are common. You can check it by jacking up one side and turning the wheels while counting driveshaft turns. In a way it doesn't matter much because you aren't going to want to change it.

RE: Ford 460 vs V10 1st vs V10 2nd gen

Yes, there are repair kits for GM and for every other engine on the earth with aluminum heads. That's for people who overtorque the plugs and strip the threads. Nobody else has the plugs blowing out of the engine when running because they've only got 4 threads. BTW, I'm not particularly fond of GM. Or Ford.

It's done. Normal life for an ammonia frige is maybe 10-12 years, yours is way over its normal lifetime.

RE: Turbo charge a gasser really cheap!?

Sure this improves mileage. Put one on yours and report back to us in a year.

RE: Ford 460 vs V10 1st vs V10 2nd gen

If I had a first gen V-10 I'd do a complete spark plug repair as preventive maintenance. Cheaper than trying to fix one on the side of the road.

RE: Vandalism...file police report?

As noted in the other vandalism thread, I own a storage facility. Absolutely have a police report. For all of the reasons stated above. Plus, who knows, lightening could strike and they might actually find the perps as well. And in that case it'll allow for prosecution. If it were my place we'd have already called the sheriff ourselves (out of town, not a police jurisdiction) and had a deputy out investigating.

It just doesn't sell, the price is too high and you don't know why it just doesn't sell? Huh?

RE: Country Coach on its last breath needs 1 million -updated

A million? That's all? I'm in the middle of buying golf course for $1.1 mill. Somehow I suspect that CC needs waaaaaaaay more money than that. A million just ain't near what it used to be.

RE: Coolent leak on 8.1L

I am glad it was that. Was a relief on mine also. With these 8.1's and how hard it is to see stuff under there, I am waiting for harbor freight to put their inspection camera on sale after Thanksgiving and I am getting one of those. It's a camera with a long lead(30" I think) that you can aim around and it displays on a screen in your other hand. I think that would be real handy under the engine and looking at the rotors etc. There are HF discount coupons all over the place in magazines now. I've got 12 or 14 of them on hand for 20% off on any item in addition to the discounted items on the coupon. Check in any car magazine for a start.

RE: Thievery at my Storage Site!

You will find in most states that these "disclaimers" are NOT enforceable and if taken to court, the storage lot owner will be paying you for your loss. This information came directly from our Attorney, when we had to use a storage lot for 1 year. That would depend on your state. I can tell you that in GA the contract disclaimer is enforceable and that the storage lot has absolutely no legal liability. You may, at your option, purchase insurance for items in storage. Or your vehicle insurance may cover damage. But our storage contract quotes the GA code section which states very clearly that we have no liability whatsoever. Renters must initial that specific section. And I know both attorneys and the magistrate judge in the county where we operate.

RE: Thievery at my Storage Site!

I can see the other side of this as I own a storage facility. About 3 years ago we had some vandals break in to a couple of travel trailers on the lot. We have fences, key code gate, cameras and everything else that we can reasonably do to provide security short of having armed guards patrolling 24/7. One of the owners was reasonable and I reimbursed him in full even though I have no legal obligation whatsoever to do so. The other wanted to be an a****** about it and I let him go to his insurance company. The perps were caught a couple of months later burgling a home nearby, but of course nothing they took (TVs and VCRs) was recovered and they did more damage (windows, doors) breaking in than the value of the stuff they stole. In the over 10 years we've be in this business that's the only problem we've had, less than $1000 of total loss. But many other storage operations have far, far greater losses much more frequently. There will always be some idiots out there who will do stuff like this, causing thousands of dollars of losses in return for the very little they get out of it. You can't fix stupid.

RE: What would you do?

Upside down is upside down. There's no painless way out of this. They either take the hit or declare bankruptcy. And bankruptcy is something I'd never do unless I had a gun to my head. Some other people aren't quite as resistant to that idea.

RE: Need a new rear view system for the coach

You can get a much better system for much less money in current stuff.

RE: am i being too picky ?

One real advantage of buying used is that you don't have a warranty. When something doesn't work there's no need to spend days hassling over who will fix it and when. You just fix it and you're done. Motorhomes are complex animals with many more systems than cars. They're built on a low volume individual unit basis. There's about no hope of getting the same build quality that you find on something relatively simple built in the hundreds of thousands. It's less expensive for the manufacturer, and thus for you, to let you find the problems and report them than it is for the manufacturer to test drive each unit for 10,000 miles to try to find any possible problem. Don't worry, be happy.
