RE: China Bombs Got Me

Reporting a tire failure and any damaged caused by it, in itself, answers nothing.
The accusations far outweigh the known causes of RV trailer tire failures.
Tread separations are high on the list of known failures. However, the cause of the tread separations are not investigated. The most common causes for tread separations are low air pressure - overloading - and excessive speed. If a poster can verify without a doubt that none of those conditions ever existed with their tires than why did they not turn the tire in for expert examination? Until a valid reason for the tread separation is determined the complaint is just another unsubstantiated accusation.
Remember, even though an owner currently maintains their tires within the parameters needed to achieve an expected life expectancy, it may not be attainable. Tire damage is cumulative and unforgiving. Past damage - even though unseen - ultimately takes its toll in the end.
Well I know what my trailer weighs and have the scale tickets to prove it. I don't travel over the tires limits and you will need to take my word on that and finally because. I have a TPMS as I suggested earlier in the thread, I know that the air pressure wasn't low. So that leaves the China bombs as I have not had tire problems since changing to Maxxis tires. But I still say the best money you will ever spend is on a TPMS
If the tires were reliable none of this would be needed.

RE: 2002 F350 Lariat with 7.3L Diesel

Remember too that not all 2003's had the 7.3. Ford changed to the 6.0 in the middle of 2003. The early 6.0's had a lot of problems. Just make sure that the one your looking at is really the 7.3. A lot of times people just assume that a 2003 isk a 7.3.
This is correct. The 6.0L diesel engine mated with a different transmission became available mid 2003 model year. The dealers were pushing the new engine and having trouble selling the remaining 7.3's . Bought my 7.3L significantly under invoice.Glad I did now. The early 6.0's had big time problems.

RE: China Bombs Got Me

I find it offensive that anyone who reports a tire failure gets grilled about tire pressure and/or weight.
I do not find it offensive at all. These are the very first questions that should be asked after ANY tire blow out. To jump to conclusions that one particular brand is ALWAYS the root cause is poor judgement.
With the high number of ST tire failures reported here on RV.net, the very first question should be: "What type of tire is it?" I went through several ST tire failures and none were caused by low inflation. One could not get more anal about monitoring tire pressure than I am. In all cases the ST tires failed because of Tread Separation and that failure has even occurred on spares that have never been on the road as reported right here on RV.net. ST tires have proven to be totally unreliable on the heavier trailers. On lighter trailers they may last longer. Now running LT tires without problems. I guess my monitoring of tire pressure has improved. :-)

RE: 2002 F350 Lariat with 7.3L Diesel

As I recall the 2002 F350 Dually has less towing capacity than a F250 because the dually is heavier. The only advantage is the pin weight on the F350. And if I also remember properly the total combined weight rating of the truck and trailer is around 20,000 lbs depending heavily on configuration such as 4WD, CC, etc. That would probably dictate a 5th wheel or trailer less than 12,000 to 13,000 lbs

RE: China Bombs Got Me

I sure read a lot of posts about TT and 5'er owners' problems with tires.
I'm curious ... don't mainline tire manufacturers like Michelin and Cooper offer tire types and sizes for TTs and 5'ers? If they do, I'd sure put these problems to bed by considering tires from OEMs like these instead of messing around with tires from across the Pacific. FWIW, I would use only the best there is on a TT or 5'er if I had one. Blowouts on towables intuitively seem potentially very dangerous to me.
Yes they do. LT tires stand up. ST tires do not.

RE: Montana 3100 RL

You have more important things to be concerned about on a Montana than the portable Island.
That could be said of any fifth wheel, but did your comment help answer his question, which was his concern about the portable island.
To the op , I have to think the island stays where it belongs, but hopefully you will get the answer you need from owners of the 3100RL
If he listened !I gave him the best advice he has received so far

RE: 2002 F350 Lariat with 7.3L Diesel

i'm told that with some modifications my 2001 7.3 dually 4x4 crew can pull (or more importantly--STOP!!) upwards of it's rating--any one know which mods are going to achieve this?
i don't want to walk into a diesel performance shop and be completely ignorant!!
After all the mods you still are going to have a truck with the same GVWR.

RE: Opinions Wanted

I just put Bridgestone R250 Duravis LT 235/85 R16's on a 13,950 GVWR 5th wheel with a pin weight of over 2500 lbs with 6,000 lb axles. I narrowed my choices down to Firestone Transforce HT's, Bridgestone R250 Duravis and Michelin Ribs. At the time I had to make a decision the Bridgestone tires were on sale and not much more than $100 more than the Firestones. I paid $919 total including tax for 4 tires including moiunting, balance new stems, etc. The Michelin Ribs would have been another $400. My view is the Bridgestones were worth the $100 extra over the Firestone HT's and close to the reputation of the Michelin Ribs with a $400 savings. Only have about 2,000 miles on the new Bridgstones so far but they sure are a better looking and much heavier than the ST tires that were on the 5th wheel originally. I went through two sets of ST tires in 6 1/2 years each set having less than 10,000 miles on them. Tread seperation issues. Will never own another ST tire on a 5th wheel.

RE: 2002 F350 Lariat with 7.3L Diesel

We own a 2003 F250 Lariat with the 7.3L diesel engine that we purchased new. Have towed a 38' Monatana 3400RL 5th wheel for the last 6 years. Now have 135,000 miles on the truck of which 30 to 40,000 miles have been towing the 5th wheel or a 20' 12,500 lb equipment trailer. Absolutely no engine problems at all. The weak link on thses trucks is the transmission. Our trasmission started heating up more than nornal the last couple years. Added an additional supplemental transmission oil cooler. That brought the transmission temps back to normal.

RE: China Bombs Got Me

nd he gave me a full refund for all four and I had him install Toyo AT's and never had another problem.
One item that a lot of you never take into consideration is how often has that tire been curbed when going around a corner. That is an item that can really ruin a tire in a big hurry and not just the sidewall, but the tread and the wheel
I drive a school bus and used to have a supervisor who could see a curb mark a mile away when we came back into the yard after a run. He'd make you go out with the driver trainer after seeing several of them. Very embarrasing.
Point well taken, however, when Chinese made ST tires that have never been on the road develop tread separation while mounted in the spare storage location all excuses for owner caused tire failure become a joke. These spare tire failures have been repeatedly reported right here on RV.net as well as many other RV sites. So lets not try to put Lipstick on a Pig.

RE: Digital Multimeters- An RVer's Best Friend

I carry a $4.95, $2.00 on sale from Harbor Freight DMM in the 5th wheel at all times. Is it really accurate in measuring ohms? No! But for casual voltage checking, shorts, broken connections, intermittent connections it is perfectly adequate. For real serious electrical diagnosis I use a $200 plus Fluke DMM that has multiple features for measuring multiple electrical items very accurately when needed. But for most RV needs a 10% error possibility IS GOOD ENOUGH. I still prefer the old style analog meters that were made by Simpson and Triplett but they are becoming obsolete and expensive if they can be found.

RE: China Bombs Got Me

I find it offensive that anyone who reports a tire failure gets grilled about tire pressure and/or weight.
The suggestion was that he call an attorney.
The reason for asking the questions about tire pressure and weight is because that is what the tire company is going to claim. HE UNDERINFLATED THEM.
or did not properly inflate them
So I ask the question, here, where he has the choice of responding or not, to prepare him for what the Tire Company Liar is going to claim.
Now do you understand the question?
Personally... I know that most folks are more likely to go with the max pressure for the tire than they are the sticker pressure on the RV and at that pressure you loose several things, including tire life (But not that much) mostly tread life, not blow out loss.
You loose control easier, and it's a rougher ride, but it's not as likely to blow out as if it's under inflated.
I also had a trailer that even with max pressure would blow a casing every time I towed it till I upgraded the tires.
THIS. I suspect, is the Original poster's problem.. But as I said the Tire Company Liar and the trailer maker will try to blame the original poster. How it's done. So he needs to be ready to answer those question if he sues, which he should do.
The primary (but not all) offending parties in all these tire failure prolems are the original RV manufacturers. Until we RV owners hold the manufacturers responsible for using these underated and poorly built tires on the RV's they sell to the unsuspecting public, nothing will change. As long as the tire manufacturers and RV manufacturers can divert our attention from them the more they can get by with this shoddy practice. So when we attack RV owners for tire failures all we are doing is assigning the blame where it doesn't belong. I find it very telling that those same RV owners that have had OEM ST Tire failures suddenly cean up their tire PM procedusres when they install LT tires. You and I both know that is a complete fabrication.

As I recall the update was around 49 Mb fo rmy system. That doesn't explain several GB of download.
