RE: Value place, Orlando Goldenrod Rd.

The Value Place is a fairly new establishment. Now there is a grocery store down the road less then a half mile. Orlando has grown by leaps and bounds and now there are several gas stations and convience stores and a strip mall nearby. As was stated....easy on and easy off the expressway.

RE: For Those With Only Summer To Travel

No matter where you may go, throw in some geocaching with him !! We went to Alaska this past summer ourselves. Beautiful country and a trip you will never forget. We have learned about geocaching and now will be including this in all our travels. Try it out with him, he may like it !! www.geocaching.com Also something we have continued doing since we have been home ! :B

RE: Orlando S.E. / Lake Whippoorwill KOA

We have stayed at the campground you are asking about. It is an alright place but really not the best choice if you want the beach with the kids. I have stayed several times over at Cape Canaveral at Jetty Park Campground. They have swimming in the ocean, big long jetty's to fish from and the cruise ships come in and out of the area so you can see them right there at the campground. There is concession stands for the boardwalk area. It is in close proximity to Titusville and Cocoa Beach.

RE: women driving 5th wheel

My DH and I both take the honors of driving the 5er. We just finished a 13,000 mile trip last month from Florida to Alaska and back, in which I did about 75% of the driving. Yes I can drive through the mountains. We had only been on one camping trip prior to taking the long haul. It was a great experience and so glad we just jumped in and did it !!! I tend to inside (opening and closing of slides and clearing counters) while husband does all the outside duties. Oh, btw, I am 65 !

RE: Potable Water

I would suggest you fill up with water before leaving the campground you stay at just before where you are going if there is none available there. If this isn't possible for some reason, stop at one of the RV parks as you pass through Anchorage and fill up the tank.
We are quite a ways from where we are going and was just trying to not take on extra weight as we traveled there. If that is what we have to do then so be it. Thanks, Skip

RE: Al-Can hwy

Don't let your friends drive drunk OR sober up the AlCan highway! It's all broken up! Though it's torn up from Tok to the border, the worst part so far is from the border to Whitehorse. We're in at Whitehorse for the night, tomorrow and heading south on Sunday. Hope it gets better. It isn't the mud and running on gravel that's getting to us and that's bad enough; it's the bumps and dips ... and we're going SLOW! Never ever ever ever never again! Broken parts, opposing 18-wheelers going fast enough to throw rocks into the bed of our pickup Under the nose of the 5er let alone the side of the truck and trailer and windshield! We were warned by friends, but we thought it couldn't be that bad. IT IS! It's like the difference between cutting your finger while making a salad or something and cutting off your hand! It's BAD! We'll fly up and Rent a Dent if we feel the need to come back. Loved the scenery and fun in Alaska, but the road isn't worth it!
We too just came up the alcan mid July....what a rough road. Tar all over the bottom front of the 5vr. We had mud flaps on the truck but it did not stop the tar from getting on the 5vr. Got a chipped windshield from one of those fast moving trucks. Love the country but do not like the construction on the roads !! Now I will have to do it all over again to get back to the lower 48. For now, I will enjoy this beautiful state for awhile.

Changing a Flat Tire

When changing a flat tire on a 5vr is it alright to place the hydraulic jack & lift by the axle attached to the leaf spring assembly ? I have read that if so it might bend the axle. :? Is this true or should I buy the right ton bottle jack and lift by the frame ? What to the majority of you do ? Thanks for all the help on here....you are a bunch of wonderful people with endless knowledge !!! :D

Thanks

One vs Two

Do most people feel that traveling to and through Alaska with one spare tire is adequate, or do most people carry two spares? We have a dually pulling a fifth wheel. I have heard that sometimes when tires blow they also blow the one next to them. Just wondering what most travelers feel comfortable with. :@

Air vs Electric

We will be going on an extended trip in a couple weeks (Alaska). The DH was wondering which would be better: an electric impact wrench (hooked to our generator) or an air impact wrench (hooked to the air compressor)
for using to break the lugs on the fiver tires should the need arise. We do carry Good Sam roadside assistance, but in remote areas we may not be able to contact them if the need arises. What do you more experienced RVer's think ??? electric vs air :? Thanks !

RE: 50 Amp Power Cord Security

I carry a few thousand dollars worth of power cords and welding cable on my welding truck. Every single one of my cords and cables stays locked up at all times, unless I am actively using them. Theft of copper piping and wiring from construction job sites has been a big problem for a few years now. You are well advised to keep your cables safe by whatever means practical. Parking a tire on the cable will do the trick. Not the best thing for the cable, but better a cable that wears out sooner, than one that isn't there at all. Of course, they can still cut the cable next to the tire.... Not much you can do about that.
Shoot, in Florida not only do thieves strip wire and AC units out of empty foreclosed homes, they have stolen entire AC compressor/condensers from OCCUPIED homes! One of the hottest "accessories" AC contractors sell is a metal cage that is set around the compressor in concrete, with a locking door for the service side of the unit. :M
2x that.....We had the whole unit, case and all, stolen from one of our rental properties while it was not occupied. They also steal pumps for the well if no one resides on the property. Copper wire is a big deal for thieves in today's market !!!

RE: Alberta provincial parks

Thanks so much for all the good sites. I need to be in Anchorage by a certain date so was taking the more direct route. Would love to come back through the Icefields Parkway and Lake Louise on the way back. Will not feel rushed and will be able to take our time. Plus most of the summer rush should be out of the way, Thanks for all the provincial park sites I can check out. What a group here !!!

Alberta provincial parks

We will be traveling through Alberta on our way to Alaska in July. I have reservations at the Gold Spring Campground in Milk River, just across the boarder. Was wondering if anyone knew of some provincial parks that might have pull throughs along the route. Will be traveling route 2 to Edmonton and then route 43 on to British Columbia. All the parks look so beautiful. Recommendations from some of you more experienced travelers would be greatly appreciated. This is our first long haul trip. Thanks !!

RE: aftermath of Mitchell Rv Fire

Hello to RV.net We are the rvers who lost our camper on May 22nd. Just a note to let everyone know we are ok have picked out a 2006 Jay Flight 27.5 5th wheel. Jacks Campers in Mitchell SD. They are even letting us live in it and haven't given them a cent. Camper so like the Coachmen is scary. Still in Mitchell SD awaiting finalization of insurances but hope to move on next week and continue our trip to Alaska. Although we are sure we are Mitchells new stimulus package we are doing just fine. Never found out what caused fire never will time to move on. We are still fragile only have to get a wiff of smoke in the air to get me nervous. Want to thank you all for thoughts & prayers. People have been so kind to us.
Sounds like a very good RV dealer. So glad to hear the outcome is not so dismal for you. We will be staying in Mitchell, SD next month on our way to Alaska also. Hope you get on your way safe and sound in a short while. May God go with you !!

RE: On our Way!!!!

So nice to hear of everyone starting their trips. I am so envious !! We originally had planned on leaving in mid June, however, due to some things beyond our control, it will now be first part of July. I am so anxious it is hard to contain myself. Maybe we will miss some of the crowded conditions ? Anyways, good to hear that ya all have started out and know I will be dragging up the rear !!!
