Water Heater Cost

I'be been given a quote, from a mechanic I trust, for the installation of a new water heater on my Freelander 3100SO, necessary plumbing, as well as a new water pump, for right around $1100. Do you folks think this is in the ballpark? This guy has treated me well before, by the way. Best, Lee

RE: Motor Home evaluation

Don't necessarily trust the word of a "qualified" inspector. Some of them are notoriously bad.

RE: Passed on the right shoulder at 65 mph?

Similar experience here, while pulling our Little Guy teardrop with an SUV. We were passing in the left lane, signaled when it was clear to get back to the right lane. In the meantime a car traveling perhaps 100mph dashed into the right lane when we were almost compltetely within the lane, and then passed us on the shoulder, made a naughty hand gesture, and veered into oncoming traffic, narrowly avoiding killing a number of people, including us. Of course, this is in Nevada, where traffic laws are not enforced. Makes me glad we now have a 31' Class C. I just stay with the flow of traffic, figuring that I am very visible, and more importantly BIGGER than the slash and crash drivers. Best, Lee

RE: E350 or E450?

I seem to be getting around 10mpg with my Ford V10, with 8500 miles, carrying a 31 foot Coachmen house with one slide. The engine is mighty, in terms of acceleration, and the torque is incredible. I am a Ford man, so I might be a bit biased, but the engine is a gem. Last week, it carried us up the worst grade I've ever encountered (2000 feet to 9000 feet in 16 miles), and while it screamed, it got us there. The engine apparently is engineered so that you cannot overstress it, and it held us at around 40mph with the tach nudging 4200rpm. All this being said, however, it's the floorplan, in my opinion, which is the determining factor in any purchase. Have fun!

RE: Please Don't Make This Mistake

Happy to report that the seller and I reached a settlement of this matter. The inspector, however tells us that he may have missed a few items, but that he does not warrant his work. In other words, if he misses big problems, oh well, it's in the nature of the game. Also, he explicitly tells us that he provides no refunds. In this case, I paid $200 for essentially nothing. To prevent others from being mislead by this fellow, I am in the process of filing a formal complaint with the California Bureau of Auto Repair, which is his licensing agency. So now, we have a fixable MH which we hope will give us a lot of enjoyment. Thanks again for your thoughts!

RE: Please Don't Make This Mistake

I have contacted the seller, and we are handling the matter in what I hope is a rational manner. The inspector is ignoring me, so I may well go right for his license. What a nightmare! Thanks for your help and assistance, ladies and gentlemen!

RE: A very close call on the way to Myrtle beach

Glad everythging is okay. It seems as though we are forced to be much more alert and skillful drivers than drivers of those little things called cars and trucks.

RE: Please Don't Make This Mistake

Thanks for the very kind and well-advised replies. They take a bit of sting out of this whole thing. I'm ready to start enjoying the RV, instead of worrying about it. Yep, I should have eyeballed the coach myself, and was perhaps naive. I thought I was exercising due diligence, but I guess I wasn't. I guess inspectors aren't as professional as I would have wanted. Anyway, I'm far more upset with the inspector than with the seller. While there is plenty of blame to go around, the inspector signed off on the report. As a former real estate appraiser, I know that your signature, or the misuse thereof, is critical. I feel that if the seller makes some form of restitution, he and I can reach an accommodation. However, I plan on hounding the inspector far into the future if need be. My niece is an attorney who has looked at this, and feels that I have an excellent casse either in a court, or with the licensing agencies. Again, thanks to the friendly folks on the forum for the valuable advice. Hope to meet up some day on the open road. And I promise future posts will be more upbeat! And yes, we still really like the coach!

Please Don't Make This Mistake

My wife and I recently purchased our first motorhome, a Class C, a Coachmen Freelander 3100SO. It is a 2007 model, with 8500 miles on the clock. The price was right, the pictures were stunning, and after much shopping, we pulled the trigger. The unit was listed on E-Bay, and everything seemed to be on the up-and-up. We made an offer, which was accepted. As we were making plans to travel to California (we live in Nevada) the seller let us know that he would only complete the transaction outside of E-Bay. Red flags immediately raised themselves, but we liked the unit so much, we decided to go ahead. After all, the seller seemed like a good guy, and, as I saud before, the pix were stunning. Thinking I was doing my due diligence, I contracted with a licensed coach inspector in California, and arranged the inspection. The seller told me I was wasting my money because the coach was so perfect. The inspector came back saying that the motorhome was "great", and the only items needing attention were sealant around the roof vents as well as a generator service call. Thinking this was reasonable, we got the cash, and went to California to pick up the coach. Upon seeing the coach, everything seemed fine and we signed the papers. Within two weeks, we discovered a split water heater, a non-functioning air conditioning unit, an inoperative toilet, water damage under the kitchen sink, overly-dressed tires, hiding significant cracking along the sidewalls, and a whole host of other serious and expensive problems. Oh, also the water pump worked a total of one day, the tanks were filthy, and a number of problems had been addressed with duct tape. Additionally, the rear top of the coach exhibited evidence of having been hit and damaged. All this, after I had contracted to have the unit checked. Since then, I have learned that the seller is a dealer, the unit was bought by him at auction, instead of being a trade-in as was stated, and the company has vanished, and has apparently been reopened under another name. There are also a number of undisclosed people and addresses involved here. I had real concerns that the pink slip was forged, but the State of Nevada allowed it to be registered, so that was a relief. Right now, my strongest suspicion is that the inspector did not even see the interior of the unit, and I further suspect that the seller, who appears to have substantial means, may have paid off the inspector. As of now, I have contacted both the seller and the inspector telling them the myriad of problems with this coach, and asking them to make it right. I'll let you know what happens, but won't pubiclally name them, out of what is probably a misplaced sense of fairness.. I would, however, be happy to privately tell members all of the names and other details. We are seniors, both disabled, and would hate to see these people get away with this type of unethical behavior. Sorry for the negative post, but we felt the need to warn others of this kind of thing. Needless to say, I feel like a fool...
