RE: Henderson Beach Fl, Electrictry

I don't know what you are looking at, but if you go to the reservation webpage it says that there are 29 sites with 50A out of a total of 52. Sites are reservable by number, so if there were available 50A sites you would have seen them.

RE: wifi help

WiFiRanger is probably one of the best, today, especially for a novice. It's expensive but because of the purposed design, and ability to place on the crank up antenna, it works well. WiFiRanger products start at the ~$100 level and extend to the $300-400 range depending on how much WiFi capability you want to achieve. Many people are quite satisfied with the performance of the WiFiRanger Go which has a price of $109. The system mentioned by KiWi is the WFR Mobile which has increased transmission power and an external antenna. It can be added later to an already purchased Go to improve performance.

RE: wifi help

There are a number of companies that make devices that can improve your ability to communicate with a campground's wifi access point. Bill mentioned WiFi Ranger and there are several others. What's important to understand is that wifi is a two-way communication process; many times your computer can "see" the access point's signal but doesn't have enough transmission power to send a signal back to it. A "repeater" as you call it has to do more than repeat the signal, it has to be able to send your message back to the CG's wifi.

RE: Blu Ray Players with standard DVD's

Upconverted DVDs may appear to look better on an HDTV but they don't actually gain resolution. Upconversion may produce a 1080 signal from a 480i DVD but you can't "create" resolution that wasn't there before. The upconverted signal interpolates the data between existing points to approximate what probably would have been there. However, the data is a guess not a real resolution improvement. Anyone who has worked with Photoshop knows that you if you increase the number of pixels per inch on a picture you run the risk of false color effects and other aberrations being created. The situation is the same with upconversion.

RE: Unhappy with the demise of Highways Magazine

As full-timers, print magazines are among the things we definitely don't want. I'm surprised that Highways didn't go to a purely digital form before cutting it back this drastically.

RE: Recommendation for Internet Cellular Connection

Most smartphones lack an antenna port so there is no way to attach a direct-connect amplifier. Many people use the Wilson Sleek cradle amplifier and have found that it provides adequate signal amplification under most circumstances.

RE: Denon Cat5 cable- $10k

I think it's sort of a joke. Read the description of the refurbished one up for sale for $999.99: I bought one, and then upgraded it by wrapping the whole cable in platinum foil. In fact I used the excess foil to make this nifty listening hat that also improves sound quality. Hat is optional.

RE: Rv Wholesalers

I hardly buy anything costing more than a few dollars at any local stores, not just RV supplies. We are Amazon Prime subscribers and get free 2-day delivery on most things so I start with Amazon's pricing and search the web to beat them. Amazon has a very broad range of RV supplies in stock. If you factor in the cost of the gas to go to the store there's rarely any reason to drive.

RE: Need belt case for cell phone

I find that any jacket with a buttoned or zippered pocket (jeans jacket, etc) works fine as does a front pants pocket. IMHO the idea of carrying one in a belt case is the 21st-century equivalent of a pocket-protector. Us old guys are dorky enough without having to enhance the image!

RE: Directv Receiver Issue?

Most DirecTV receivers should work with your KingDome. You will not be able to receive HD but you should have no problem with Standard Definition channels. The only exception would be if you have an SWM-only receiver.

RE: Cradlepoint MB1400?

Right now, my laptop connects to the WFR just fine, but none of my 4 iOS devices will transfer data when connected, even though it shows them connected fine. In iOS6 Apple created a requirement that WMM support be enabled for the WiFi connection. The current WiFi Ranger firmware (5.6.1) does not support WMM. However, the 6.6.1 version which is currently in Beta testing, does. We regret the difficulty you are experiencing, but we do have the ability now to resolve your issue. I can arrange for your system to be updated to the new firmware and I can tell you, from experience, that my wife's iPad works very well with it.

RE: UPS Shipping to Canada

UPS charges a "brokerage fee" for items going across the border. As you have discovered it can make UPS service prohibitively expensive for small, relatively inexpensive parcels.

RE: Fantasticvent stuck?

This is fairly commom with Fantastic vents. Contact Fantastic and they will send you new gasgets/lube at no charge. I know for fact that as of 1/1/2013 Fantastic is no longer providing free parts for out-of-warranty units. I had to pay for the part I ordered and shipping and was told "that's the policy that is on our website."

RE: Vent covers

If you are trying to cover a Fantastic Vent fan, that is not the recommended model cover. MaxAir makes a cover called the FanMate which is designed for "high power" roof fans such as those produced by Fantastic. We have two and they work well.

RE: Windows 8 Reader questions

As I suggested, just download Classic Shell and disable all "gestures" on your touchpad and you can get Win 8 to act almost exactly like Win 7

RE: Windows 8 Reader questions

Go to Control Panel/Default Programs to change the default program for PDFs to Adobe Reader. Just follow the instructions.. As for closing a program in Windows 8, the old key combination ALT-F4 still works. Or you can do as I have done and work exclusively in Desktop Mode and have installed the free Classic Shell program to restore the Desktop to the look and feel of Windows 7

RE: Internet Access on the Road

I am trying to find the best way to get internet access while on the road or in an area with no wi-fi. I have a droid type phone that I have been told I can use but it drains the phone battery quickly plus there is an add on charge through Verizon. \ The battery life issue is no big deal, you just plug the phone into a charger when you are running it as a hot spot. If you have one of Verizon's Shared Data plans there is NO additional charge for using your phone as a wifi hot spot. Don't let anyone here tell you differently; this was the result of a lawsuit against Verizon last year. The only people who have to pay for hot spot usage are people with grandfathered unlimited data plans.

RE: DirecTV Spot Beams/Local Channels

It's DirecTV's way of doing business. If you don't like their rules, don't be their customer.

RE: DirecTV Spot Beams/Local Channels

I am a frustrated Rv'er when it comes to deciding about getting a satellite. It is true that you have to have your satellite hard wired onto your RV and register it with the FCC in order to have DISH change your receiving location? It seems I get a different answer every time I think I am going to buy a portable satellite. And to those who say use the OTA antenna...there are NO local channels in Key West so if you want tv...satellite is it. IMHO I think you've confused a number of things. We have DNS service which does require us to file a form that states that our satellite receiver is in an RV, but that's not "registering your RV with the FCC" nor is our receiver any more "hardwired" into our MH than anyone else's. However, none of this has anything to do with your ability to have your location changed by Dish (or DTV) so you can get local channels.

RE: DirecTV Spot Beams/Local Channels

Are you aware that there is an over-the-air tuner that integrates with many DirecTV receivers and DVRs? There is no monthly charge, just a one-time purchase. The local stations end up fully integrated with the DirecTV Guide just as if they are being received from the satellite. You can even use your DVR to record programs: AM21 Tuner We happen to have DNS service which gets us the NY stations everywhere we go, but we also enjoy watching local news on occasion. This tuner lets us do that without having to change our service address every time we change locations.
