RE: Third brake light, center brake light whatever you call it

Actually, they are called "High Mount Brake Light" and you can go to just about any auto parts store and buy them off the shelf. Most of them today are LED rather than the old filament bulb. We wanted one for our toad as it is an '86 and therefore pre-HMBL. I searched around most of the auto parts stores and finally decided on one from Kragen. The truck already had a "bed lamp" mounted on the top of the rear face of the cab (above the back window) and it was a pretty simple matter of pulling that off and replacing it with the HMBL. Spliced into the brake light wire from the brake switch and used the same wires originally installed for the bed light. Piece of cake! Hope this helps Ron

RE: Checking tire pressure

Mine already have the extensions. As far as checking the pressure, I check it each and every time I start out and about every 15 minutes or so while on the road. Ron

RE: California Weight Check Point Calimesa This Week

FYI, all pickups including the smaill ones have to be registerd as comm. vehs unless there is a permanetly attached camper attached. Shell do not quailfy as campers. This is first hand info not heresay. Well, that's very strange as I do have a smaill (sic) pickup and a full size 1/2 ton. Both have permanetly (sic) camper shells and are both registerd (sic) as non-commercial and therefore my information is not heresay (sic). Ron

RE: Houston, I think we have a WATER problem.

I agree with Skip and Brad. Water sitting in the lines are just as contaminated as the tank (including the water heater tank). ALL needs to be sanitized. If after you have done the sanitizing, you can dilute a small box of baking soda in hot water and pour into the tank. Fill and run through all lines and faucets (again including the water heater tank) and then let sit for an hour or so and then drain and refill. The baking soda will absorb the majority of the chlorine smell. Good luck. Ron

RE: California Weight Check Point Calimesa This Week

Maybe they are checking California pick-up trucks to ensure they are properly registered to haul a load. When I lived in California many years ago, I recall their license fees were higher if you used your pick-up to actually carry a load. Jack I think what you are referring to here is that ALL pickups in California are automatically registered with commercial license plates unless it has a permanently mounted camper (or shell) on the back. The fees are significantly different. If you do register it non-commercial by putting a shell on the back and take it off later...if you get stopped by any LEO (they will check your registration) you will be fined for illegal registration. RE: Towing Jeep Wrangler

RicJones wrote "if you have an automatic transmission it goes into park." I might be wrong, but why would the transmission not be put in "neutral"? I know my manual transmission goes in gear, but would not putting the transmission in "park" lock up the rear wheels? Just asking. I think if you re-read his post, he first said to put the transfer case in neutral, then the trans in park. With the transfer case in neutral, the transmission is not turning over. He is talking only about the 4wd versions with manual transfer cases. Ron

RE: sway control

With my TT I went from the friction anti-sway bar to the DC. As others have said, forget the friction bar, the DC will be sufficient. Posted By: Yahooligan on 11/23/09 01:33pm ^^^ Everyone that has the Reese Dual Cam says it's been great, I think if you do a simple search you will uncover lots of posts about problems with the DC. It's very well documented here. Ron

RE: California Weight Check Point Calimesa This Week

All trucks with trailers does not mean all pickups with trailers. Two different animals.

RE: A message from Mike Schneider, CEO, Affinity

Mike, please add my name to the admirers of this forum. Came here years ago with little real rv knowledge and a lot of assumptions and questions. The good people here on RV.NET have educated me and you have provided the means to allow me to pass on any of my gathered knowledge to others who are just starting out or seeking further information. I wear my RV.NET sticker proudly on my MH. Ron

RE: Suggestions for Inexpensive, lightweight dinghy

Go to motorhome magazine website (HERE) and look about 1/2 down on the right side and click on "Dinghy Guide 2009" and it will give you a complete list of those vehicles available for 4-down towing. Hope this helps Ron

RE: How does the US Gear Toad Brake System Work?

The cable/pulley system that mounts under the front seat does need to be secured properly and make sure there is no binding of the cable or it will impair the operation of the actuator. Well, maybe not quite true. Our unit only sits on the carpeted floor under the driver's seat and is not secured at all. I too, questioned this installation; however, several US Gear technicians, at different rv rally's, indicated the unit does not have to be secured. The pulley that is mounted on the inside firewall definitely has to be secured, but not the unit under the seat. Ron

RE: running reefer on inverter

We too stopped at Juneau (after leaving from Haines) for several days, then on to Sitka for several days, then overnight trip (that's when we plugged into the ship's 120v system) to Ketchikan for several days and then on down to Prince Rupert (which was when we also plugged into the ship's 120v system). These stop offs do increase the price significantly, but the trade off of being able to explore all those different places is well worth the additional costs. If you can afford it, do it!

RE: running reefer on inverter

What we did when on the Marine Highway was to ask one of the guys who will be guiding you into the ship if you can be placed next to the center section and hook up to one of their 120v/15amp outlets. I did this twice and both times they accommodated me. However, be aware that their generators are not real accurate and voltage peaks and valleys could be experienced. I highly recommend that you get a surge-gard (or equivalent) to insure the safety of your electronics. Hope this helps Ron

RE: How does the US Gear Toad Brake System Work?

We've had one for two years and we are very satisfied with its performance. We have, however, had problems with the electrical connector (included into the umbilical cord) that occasionally causes the system to fail and accordingly, causes the control unit in the MH to sound an alarm. I will replace both connectors this winter to see if I can eliminate this problem. We are planning on getting a new toad here in the fairly new future and I will transfer the brake unit to the new toad. I did not install in my present toad, but I don't think it will be too difficult to do. Others have given you a very good detailed description of the components so I won't delve into that aspect of your questions. We basically went with this system due to the fact that our MH was pre-wired for this exact system. Made installation much easier and cheaper. See ya Ron

RE: Water Pressure Regulators

I have used several models and like PapaBob, I have settled on the adjustable unit. One thing nobody has mentioned is that I'm sure like many others, it is not uncommon to pull into a new rv site and go to hook up the water and lo and behold there is already a regulator/restrictor attached to the water faucet. I bet this is the most common item "left" unintentionally when people pick up and leave. So, word to the wise, make sure you have a good "check list" that includes the regulator. Another item I often find is awning wands. Ron

RE: Battery slide out tray

You know, that's an excellent idea. I have seen those devices at several rv shows. Maybe I'll take a closer look next time. However, the tray would also provide the capability to clean/replace the batteries/cables too.
