RE: Same Name???

Are you sure the sender didn't simply miss-address the message? Maybe they meant rvtommy1 for example?

RE: Questions about digital book readers

DRM is licensed to a Kindle serial number through a manipulation of the serial number into a DRM key.
I doubt that the serial number on the actual Kindle device has much to do with it-- given that you can buy, download, and read Kindle books even if you don't have a Kindle. While I haven't used the PC version I did need to convert my Kindle serial number to a DRM key in order to read library books so please, doubt all you want, but it is a fact. Even my Mobi PC e-reader has it's own key - probably derived from something in my PC.

will the iPhone do VOIP ? or does it have to be jail broken first ?You can download a Skype app without Jailbreaking the iPhone. It works on wifi, not 3G.

RE: working with 2 pc monitors

Start->Control Panel->Display then click the Settings tab. Click on the picture of Monitor 2 and then check the box that says Extend my Windows desktop onto this monitor and then click OK. Next drag your online stock ticker to the other monitor and you are all set. This will not work if the window is maximized, you need to have it at the intermediate, adjustable size to drag it to another monitor. Once there you can maximize it.
If the monitors are on the "wrong side", that is the mouse does not drag between them but rather around the right the opposite sides, simply click and hold on the Monitor 2 icon and drag it left of Monitor 1 and they will reverse position.

RE: Questions about digital book readers

Apparently the books you download or "save" on Amazon's website are, through the DRM (digitial rights management), are licensed to the serial number of your Kindle.
Totally false.
Books you buy from Amazon are linked to your account, not to a particular Kindle. Each account can have up to six active Kindles, and, unless you specify otherwise (ie, parental controls), all have access to all the purchased books.
Having just spent a bunch of time learning about DRM I have to say you are both right - although maybe you didn't mean to be.
DRM is licensed to a Kindle serial number through a manipulation of the serial number into a DRM key. The trick is that you can change serial numbers and hence change DRM keys by associating a different Kindle with your account. When you have doen this new association, the key derived from your serial number will then be applied to the DRM-encoded file when you download it.

RE: norton problem

And back to the OP's problem... did you try turning off the firewall to see if Gmail works? If so restart the firewall and open port 587.

RE: Getting rid of HP software

... In the meantime, I have 25 HP DAT and Application files that are labeled "spool drivers" from HP. Can I delete these without interupting other programs? While I understand your zealousness for keeping squirrels from your bird feeder :W I have to say you are messing around with things that are better not messed with. The spool drivers are probably there because they came with Windows in support of HP printers. You will also find other drivers, USB for example, in support of other HP devices. This is no different than and other manufacturer packaging up useful software and having Microsoft deliver it just to make your computer experience a little easier.
Maybe you will never buy HP equipment, but some day you might plug in something that relies on the HP drivers and then wonder "Now why isn't that stupid Windows recognizing this device :?"
BTW regarding the Add/Remove that you can't remove, If you go to C:\Windows and know the key you can delete the entries from there. Again, I wouldn't do that but you might find it soothing:W Also, If you go into My Computer you may find an HP_Recovery (D: ) where HP stashes stuff.

I'm curious - why all the fuss? Were you forcibly retired by HP? Those references and 231MB really will not matter technically.

RE: norton problem

I use NAV 2010 on my Win 7 x64 machine and it runs flawlessly (I get free licences from work). Same here (free work licenses). NAV 10 works great, but work tried to force SEP (Symantec Endpoint Protection) on us and I had to uninstall that after a couple of days.
Wish someone could help the OP (other than suggesting he uninstall) I'm not sure I understand what error message he is receiving or which product (NAV, 360, etc.) he is using. It may be a firewall issue if he is using 360 because I believe Gmail uses port 587.

RE: Looking at eMachines computer

magicbus, all of the eMachines I saw on their site had Win 7. I don't know where you were looking but I know that some outlets purchase ahead and may have some Vista machines in stock. OK, I was looking at the $199 models. For $399 there are a lot of vendors to choose from.

RE: PC performance myths

You weren't "always" right. With older operating systems and smaller hard drives, defragmentation did improve PC performance--especially if it was a heavily used PC and the hard drive had a high degree of fragmentation.Gee no kidding? Did you read the link? If you had you would have noticed the mention of the operating systems no longer requiring a defrag.
Like the OP I've noticed my laptop being bogged by MS updates and my McAfee updates. Hold on there... the "OP" never said he was bogged down and NEVER advocates CCleaner or any registry "vacuum cleaner".

RE: IPhone with AT&T

Why does it seem that EVERY iPhone thread ultimately gets hijacked by Verizon customers?
17 replies, and only 9 of those address the O.P.'s question directly. :R
As registered members of RV.net, you Verizon guys do know that you can start your own threads.....Right?
Know what?
I'm beginning to thing those highjackers might actually WORK for Verizon. :R
We state how we have had no issues with our AT&T service, and that Verizon just might be using a bunch of marketing hype, and the hyjackers com along and straight out us blatant liars.
I don't understand this certain group of people who feels that if they don't RABIDLY defend the product they own (be it Ford, Dodge, Verizon, Mac, Linux, etc), it will magically disappear from their hands. I mean, these people are literally FOAMING AT THE MOUTH as they spout off about the superiority of their chosen toy.
Geez folks, this is how WARS start! :E
Why do YOU feel PERSONALLY attacked just because I prefer AT&T over Verizon, or a PC over a MAC? Personally, I'm happy with my choice, and if you choice is something else, good for you. That means you are happy too (or are you REALLY?).
I couldn't agree more! I too get tired of being called a liar because I report personal experience - and not particularly limited experience at that. :R

RE: Tired of computer updates, may go to a Mac

You will still need the updates - even on a Mac but if you want one go for it. You should turn off the HP updates, dump Mcafee and go with something like the free AVG that updates automatically, and schedule the scans at night or during your lunch or turn them off altogether. I got so tired of Java updates that I turned it off too, but these aren't Windows fault - complain to Sun.

RE: Digital Book reader

The lack of backlit screen means she would still need ambient lighting. She thought that if she could read without needing ambient lighting, she might like it. She uses a book light to help me to get to sleep.
She has tried using her I-touch. Just doesn't like reading books on itThis is the tradeoff - no backlighting or backlight with eye strain.
I can see why (it would enable folks to get Whispernet downloads even when there isn't any suitable cell coverageThis works right out of the box. If there is no cell service you download to your PC and copy it to your Kindle. I was talking about using the Kindle cell service for a computer connection.

RE: Kindle and non-Amazon books.

That looks like a problem with your library's restrictions, not Kindle's. I use the Kindle For PC software, not a physical Kindle, but I've downloaded and read a number MOBI format books from the Guttenberg, Baen, and ManyBooks sites with no problems.
Dutch I too download from Manybooks, but those are completely unlocked public domain books Mobi format books. The libraries lend locked books that may only be used on registered devices and the fact that my library apparently requires a "$" Kindle provides a "*" is their shortcoming but my problem.
I would be surprised if you could read a library book on your PC with the Kindle software - you need the Mobi software.

RE: SOLVED XP intermittent boot problem

Having done all that you have done, I would use the Device Manager to uninstall the adapter and then to check for hardware changes to reinstall.
TomI had to do exactly this last week with my workstation equipped with a Linksys wireless card. It must be a problem with their software but Tom's suggestion should work.

Kindle and non-Amazon books.

I had been told by a local librarian that I could take out e-books from the library which I thought would be pretty cool. I finally got set up to do so only to discover that you need a Mobi device ID which Kindle keeps hidden. Even after decoding my serial number into a Mobi PID (device ID) it appears that my library only accepts devices with a dollar sign($) in the ID and Kindles have an asterisk(*).
It took a bit of work and I had to install a programming environment called Python and a few scripts, but I can now download books and unlock them so that I can read them on my PC or my Kindle. A bit of a pain, but not too bad. It is interesting that much of the information on how to do this has been blacked out from forums, I suppose at the request of Amazon. Since I am legally downloading them from the library to my PC I have no moral problem also reading them on my Kindle.
Anyway, this post isn't meant to be a how-to manual, feel free to PM me if you are interested in the nitty-gritty steps, but it is more of a warning that this stuff isn't quite ready for prime-time. Making expanded use of a reader requires a bit of extra work. It is also interesting that the dedicated readers (Kindle, Sony, Nook) are noticeably missing from the Open Source tools that support e-reading. Maybe the tools will catch up or maybe the commercial readers want to control where you get your material.
