RE: Charge controller recommendations

Hi, What I would love is a spreadsheet that would let me enter parameters and allow me to tweak the controller (if it is, in fact, tweakable). smk my Blue sky flasher was solid--so it thinks the batteries are not quite fully charged. It was doing 1.6 amps into the banks.

RE: Charge controller recommendations

Hi, Just for fun I triggered my PD to 14.4 volts. Amps shot up to a whole 2.28 going into all eight batteries. (am counting the starting battery since I have a trik-l-start on it now.)

RE: Solar Help

Hi Jim, If he is going to flat dead on day 2 your numbers work. If he is only going to 50% they don't.

RE: Solar Help

Hi Mick, Here is a simple flow chart. Budget-->Energy Audit-->Battery bank size-->number of watts-->PWM or MPPT. Here is a link to the rather special spreadsheet that N8GS has created to help size solar battery charging systems! Solar Spread Sheet N8GS

RE: What did you do to your Class C MH today???

Hi, Boondocked in the rain. More rain forecast. Thank goodness I have a good battery bank!

RE: Question for the Battery Experts

Hi, If you add more, then bank switching would be the "safe" bet. But since you have 300 watts of solar, my best guess is that the six volt twins start every trip bursting full, and the same thing happens pretty much every day during holidays. There is always the generator, or alternator as a "back stop". I believe that way back when the solar system was being planned I suggested more battery capacity. At least there is enough solar to adequately recharge a doubled up bank. It is rarely wrong to have too much capacity. I'm semi full timing and am in the middle of a three day rain. It is cold enough that I'm running the furnace. It is a comfort to me to have lots of battery capacity.

RE: Charge controller recommendations

Hi smk, You also have battery "sense" wires I believe on the morningstar. It's a VERY nice unit.

RE: Eco-worthy 20a MPPT controller

Hi DS, You would have to use a buck circuit to keep the voltage constant into an inverter with light bulbs as a load.

RE: Charge controller recommendations

Hi, My first RV had 30 watts of solar. The owner paid $1100.00 for it. It served him (and me) very well.

RE: Eco-worthy 20a MPPT controller

Hi Ds, As you can see rvnet doesn't do well with tables. If you could do one line for each measurement with a description on the line it may make it easier for folks to understand the data.

RE: Ovenight parking Greater Sudbury -Sault Ste Marie

Hi, I don't think you will find a free place to boondock between those cities.

RE: 110 power

Hi, The inverter may be wired to power one or two outlets--or the entire RV. Depending on where the TV is located there may be a relay that prevents power being used while driving. Battery disconnect is used mainly for storage.

Hi, I did read your previous posts. I was hoping for a specific list. Read my previous post.

RE: Question for the Battery Experts

Hi, Be careful with load testing gel cells. They can be destroyed by that process.

RE: Question for the Battery Experts

Hi Fire, Do nothing with the battery bank. Don't bother to bring them "home" next winter. Just leave the Rogue doing its job. Do beef up the charging path from the tow vehicle, if you have not already done so.

Hi mockturtle, And those "extra" concerns are? What to do about them?

RE: Carrying Aux propane tank

Hi, Have a mount made that rests on the rear bumper. Carrying propane inside a closed compartment is illegal.

RE: Cold weather condensation solution?

Hi, To stop condensation the temperature of the surface (of glass or walls) needs to be above the dew point. Cover the windows from the outside. Another solution is a 4 inch strip of 1/2 inch thick Styrofoam insulation along the bottom of the windows--again on the outside. The water condenses on the glass, flows down, hits the warm glass and evaporates back into the air. Lowering the relative humidity also helps. Open a window and place an electric heater by it. Open a roof vent.
