RE: Avion camper rebuilds - dozens of photos

I have already learned a LOT from this forum and the Avion posts specifically. I plan on gutting the interior and adding things like solar panels. I hope to restore most of the original wood cabinets. I will install a Corian countertop in the kitchen. Will be adding a Stable Lift lift system which I already purchased used. Lots of ideas it's just a matter of time and money. Looking forward to the challenge.

RE: Avion camper rebuilds - dozens of photos

I will be starting the restoration of my 1968 C11 within the next two months so I'll be posting progress and asking questions.

RE: Anybody using Stable Lifts?

I am far from being an expert but here's my 2 cents. I purchased a 1968 Avion C11 camper with it's original three spindly legs lift system and it scared the******out of me to load it into the back of my dually 4x4. And it barely lifted high enough. I made the decision right then and there to come up with a better way. Did tons of internet searches and determined the Stable Lift was what I wanted. But being on a " toy budget " I decided to try and find a used one. In 6 months of searching I found 5-6 in various locations around the country. This past January I made a deal for a dually Stable Lift for $400.00 !!! I have not installed it yet because I'm going to do a complete restoration of the camper but have tested the motors and it works great. I have no doubt it will work perfect for my setup. Yes it looks like a swing set and maybe off road ground clearance is compromised but I don't plan on taking this rig to Baja and could care less what others think of how it looks. I want a safe , reliable and stable setup so I don't risk life and limb just loading/unloading the camper. Good luck with whatever you choose.

RE: anyone using Firestone Transforce HT tires ?

My tires came in today so I had them installed after work. My original quote out the door with mounting , balancing and tax was $828.78. When they called to tell me my truck was ready to be picked up I asked to confirm the price............$758.99 !!! So I saved an additional $70.00 and the tires look great. Two thumbs up to Pep Boys in Marietta Ga. on Powder Springs Road.

RE: anyone using Firestone Transforce HT tires ?

Thanks everyone looks like I may pull the trigger on six of these. My Avion C11 probably weighs 3000 lbs. or less fully dressed so I think the weight capacity of these tires will be fine. I will tow a 13 ' Boston Whaler which only weighs about 1000 lbs. total or an aluminum car trailer with a sports car on it so maybe 4000 lbs. I still think I'll be good.

anyone using Firestone Transforce HT tires ?

Went to a few local tire shops today to get prices for my 2001 GMC Sierra one ton dually 4 x 4. Tire size is 215/85 x 16 and came in at $118.90 per tire. I looked on line and the reviews I could find were very positive. Seems like a lot of tire for the money. I can get six of them mounted, balanced and tax for $828.78. Seems like a lot of tire for the money. Thoughts ?

RE: Hose Fitting Cracked

I agree silicone is not the proper sealant for this application. Any hardware store, Lowes or Home Depot sell plumbing thread sealant compound. It is a thick paste that comes in a tube or small can with brush applicator it is meant to seal pipe threads. It does not setup hard so you can remove the fitting in the future if you have to.

RE: Opinions of truck camper

In that picture it looks like there " may " be some delamination above the window over the rear wheel. Or it may be a shadow ?

RE: basic RV refrigerator question

Appreciate all the feedback I'm leaning towards replacing the fridge but might entertain replacing the cooling unit. I have time to make up my mind. I'm assuming the compressor fridges only run on 12v/110 is that correct ? I like the idea of using LP.

basic RV refrigerator question

The truck camper I purchased has a Dometic RM2400 refrigerator, the previous owner loosely installed it. By loosely I mean it is slid into the opening and that's it. The LP line is not hooked up and I can't tell if the 12 volt is hooked up. I have plugged the 110 volt in and the back of the heater coils get warm/hot but the interior of the fridge does not get cool. Does 12 volt have to be hooked up to operate correctly ? This camper is going to have a complete restoration but if I can save this fridge vs. buying new I would like to do so. This fridge is larger than the one it originally came with and the previous owner cut the opening to this size so I am somewhat committed to it. I believe it to be a 3.4 cu.ft. size. If 12 volt is needed for proper operation can I just set a battery outside and run a jumper wire/s to the fridge ? All I'm trying to do at the moment is figure out if it will cool or not. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.........Rick

RE: Avion camper rebuilds - dozens of photos

I'm looking for an extra set of horizontal propane tanks so I can keep some filled ones on hand and swap them as needed. Has anyone converted to some other system? Any "parts" C-11s out there?
I think that there are several folks looking for those tanks. They are hard to find these days.
You're looking for an " extra " set I'm looking to have a set ! My C11 didn't come with any tanks when I got her last year. Any leads on a pair of tanks is appreciated.

RE: stable lift installation- centering question

Wayne your explanation makes perfect sense and the picture is a bonus. If by chance you could take one or two pics of the rear in relationship to the bumper/spare tire that would be very helpful. And how did you post the picture ? I haven't figured out picture posting on this forum yet. Thanks for the help........Rick

RE: stable lift installation- centering question

By lift saddles do you mean the half round pieces that mount under the truck that the cross tubes lock into in the up/travel position ? Unfortunately I did not get those in this deal so I will have to make these. Can you explain your " 3/4" pre-load ? I'm not following what you are saying. I'm assuming ( maybe incorrectly ) that you raise the lift and when the cross bars make contact with the saddles you stop the lift so it can't damage the camper by applying to much down force on the bolts/wings is that correct ?

RE: stable lift installation- centering question

Reddog1 yes I had already planned to make the internal sandwhich plates out of aluminim plate for the very reason you suggested. I know for a fact the passenger side I'll have to replace the plywood in the jack area because it has slightly collapsed. I may skip the factory sandwhich of wood/foam/wood and go strictly wood for the strength. The switches I think for now I'll use them but I can see where your modification has merit but for now they work so I'll use them. I do appreciate your feedback it is very helpful.
