In spite of how you couch it. The price of gas/diesel is astronomical, compared to the actual cost of production. Even adding in the fuel taxes it's still just plain stupid expensive.

Not sure what you mean by the rest of the money. Taxes are paid on the gross profit which the sales minus expenses. You can look at Fortune Magazine or other sources to check on individual companies or industry averages. Microsoft has a profit of above 30% and Apple is above 30%. These record profit you keep seeing on the media are total dollars compared to last year within the same company. Oil company stocks are not know for being a great source of money. Return on investment is average. If think they are making a lot of money, call your stockbroker and convert all of your retirement to their stock. The price of gasoline has risen from according to Bloomburg $1.89 on 01/21/09 to today's level around the $3.60. As long as we continue to make most of America off limits to drilling, the price will be high. Our forcing the Canadians to change to XL pipeline to be diverted to the Canadian Pacific makes things worse. I just saw today that Steve Jobs family will over the federal government about $900 MILLION in inheritance taxes.

Never mind.
Remember. If you argue with fools, etc........
Anyone who who can defend these prices with a straight face, isn't worthy of Our attention.
Happy Thanksgiving!

Anyone who allows the greens to allow almost all of our natural resources to be off limits for political reasons and force us to buy our oil from countries who hate us isn't worthy of our attention.

Not true. Many countries have higher profit margins and yet their people remain poor and backward. Profit is just tribute paid to the most powerful people.

Canadian oil will be used to replace crude oil presently being imported from countries who hate us now.
Not true. All oil goes into the international oil pool and is purchased there. That is why they want to build the XL and send oil to the gulfport where it is easier and cheaper to ship to consumers in China and India, who are the biggest consumers (the USA only consumes 20% and that drops every year). There is simply no way, financial or physical to sequester oil for American consumers.

I wish we could build refineries in the Northern part of the US to refine it there. Makes a lot of sense, but we have not been able to get permits for a new refinery in the US for over 20 years due to environmentalist opposition.
Not true. The oil companies simply prefer to put refineries close to export facilities such as the gulf so they can easily export to their favorite customers. It's purely a financial consideration by oil managers, based on their OR (Operations Research) calculations.

I believe I heard on the TV news something about the House forcing the issue and not allowing for the EPA studies to take place. So Obama vetoed the bill rather than cut out the 'normal' procedures.
I personally have been curious as to why we/they need to pipe the crude all the way across the county. I thought that Wyoming was way closer and I I've driven past refineries up there?
I rather had the impression that there was intent to Export the oil rather than market here in the states? Who knows. I guess it doesn't matter, as it's imported oil anyway, so what ever.
On top of all that, we don't 'own' it anyway. It's all privately owned. So it's just a matter of how much they decide to gouge us for at the pumps.

What goes to China? The Pipeline? Hmmm.
I think you may have missed my point. Why the pipeline for crude,,, From Canada to the Gulf of Mexico?
I think we already have pipelines in place for 'finished' product. Here in Colorado, the 'product' is picked up east of Limon/Denver, and trucked to the immediate area.
My post was NOT intended to be political, or even environmental. I was a question of Logistics. Why import oil from canada, as crude, and pipe it (still as crude) ALL the way across the USA? Once again I say. Hmmm?
Do you NOT find that curious?
