We are starting to plan next summer's road trip and one of the places we are considering is Calgary, Alberta. Can anyone tell me what to expect as far as environment, climate, things to see and do, is it fairly forested or desolate type terrain? I would appreciate any feedback or insight from those who have been there and what you would recommend. Also, does anyone recommend any good RV parks in or around the area. Thank you in advance, Mike.

Environment& climate in Calgary are very similar to tose at Salt lake City or Denver. Calgary is on the plains (Denver) but very close to the foothills and Rocky Mountains (SLC). No not forested but it is a very pretty modern city of about 1 million people. As far as things to see and do - virtually all tastes can be met there. What are your interests?
One drawback - the choice of RV parks in the immediate vicinity of the City is pretty limited but out a few miles there are many great choices. And of course the big draw is the access to the mountain country - Kananaskis provincial parks, Banff National Park for example.

It is not far, driving goes from two very different spaces: Edmonton and that monster mall, the West Edmonton Mall and the Rocky Mountains with a number of national parks or other mountainous, and very scenic spaces
Are you interested int dinosaurs? If so then just north and east of Calgary is the little town of Drumheller. It has a world class museum of remains of dinosaurs. It is a MUST see!
Calgary's a pretty neat place. The city is nice enough, but the location to the mountains is worthy of going alone. Great sports area, too, even in summer. Summer shouldn't be too different from what you're used to in Utah. If you go, plan to stay awhile because there are so many places to go just within a few hours of the city.
The museum at Drumheller is fascinating and quite well done. And if you head into the mountains, you'll find so much to do!
Wow, what can I say. We are one of the youngest major cities in Canada right on the edge of the rockies. We have mountains a few miles to the west. prairies to the east and mountains and forests and lakes to the north. Yes we have just past the million people mark for population. Lots to do and see if you are into outdoors stuff. Banff, Kananaskis, within an hour or so will keep you busy. Come the second week of July for the Calgary Stampede. Travel north to Edmonton, Jasper and go even further if you wish. We go just south to Glacier National park in Montana if you want the best scenery without the modernization. Lots of camping nearby but not much right in town. Do some Google searching and you will find pages of info. If anything specific for questions send me a pm.

Last summer we visited Calgary - wanted to see the Olympic venues. Found Calgary itself to be a sprawling city - not the easiest or most intuitive to negotiate!!! Stayed at Calgary West CG - near the Olympic stuff - cg itself was overpriced for what it offered IMHO. It's built on the side of a hill. Had origianlly tried to go to a different CG in Calgary - after about an hour trying to negotiate trafffic and construction, we finally gave up - couldn't ever find it - even with maps, guidebooks, and GPS!!! We much preferred Kananaskis County just west of Calgary - stayed in CG there (no hookups - fine with us) - saw tons of wildlife, great views, etc. Hope this helps! ST
