Rick D, thats a bit harsh. Whispering Spruce won't win any awards but there are plenty which are far worse. We were there for stampede last summer. Nothing special about the place. Next to the highway but far enough from it so that noise was not too much. Had daily shuttle, at a cost, to the Stampede. Lots of long termers there but they are all in the N loop. As a place to park for a few nights it was OK.

o.k., I just checked Whispering Spruce again and it looks like new owners have taken over since I stayed there in 2007 - so, maybe things have improved - they'd have to that's for sure. Here's what another rv'er had to say about it the same year I stayed there:

"What a dump! If I could give it a -10 I would. The only good thing is easy access to Highway 2 but then you get the road noise. We reserved a full hookup site but what was left the previous motorhome's jack sunk in the ground so we took an electric/water site with plans to use dump site the following A.M. The front and back roads were both rutted and filled with water. Areas where roads were dry dust blew off them. Several sites setup as fulltime and not the best. The following A.M. we pulled out to dump and it was filled to the brim with human waste on the ground!Reported it to the office and had to dump at an open site. "

I can vouch for the sewers overflowing as we had the same exact problem - right at our site and the owner wasn't prepared to do anything about it until I threatened to call the Health Dept.

Having said that, I just read the latest review of the place since the new owners took over and he rated it 'excellent'. Hard to believe, but good for him - I hope he can turn it around.

One more note about Calgary campgrounds. Please, do NOT consider staying at a place called Whispering Spruce RV park - it is just north of Calgary. It is a dump!! Worse than a dump - it is a sewer! The worst place we have ever had the misfortune to stay at.

Yes, a DUMP!

Eh!

Whispering Spruce hahah. right on the highway so I guess that is the 'whisper' and not a spruce tree to be found...

The Calgary West cg is ok. Have stayed there a number of times either on our way out west or on our way back east. A bit pricy but not bad. They have a pool which is well maintained. Out of 5 stars we would give it a 3 considering its right near the city.

We stayed at Whispering Spruce last June (08). I have to agree...it is pretty much of a dump. All driveways were muddy and I had to do some back and forth maneuvering to get the MH in the assigned site. We were in between two long term sites or at least they had been there for more than several weeks) and each had lots of junk, sheds, vehicles, ect...not to mention several dogs tied up outside for hours on end. In putting down my jacks, the front sunk into the ground at least a foot and even after lifting back up and putting a 2x12x12 down, I pushed it down 6 inches or more. Getting in and out of the MH required removing shoes to keep from tracking mud into the coach. Immediately after we parked, another MH "backed" into the site immediately in front of us and made it impossible for me to leave in the morning. We had to get them to move their coach ahead 10 - 12 feet to make sufficient clearance for us to get out. They weren't too happy about that.

Of all the rv parks (65) we stayed at last summer going to Alaska and back, this was easily the worse one.

We stayed at Rivers Edge back in 04 when we went to the stampede with a Good Sam Samboree .... great place.

There's a KOA right in town; suppose if that's your thing...

There's quite a few provincial campgrounds within an hour of town - kananaskis country has numerous; mclean creek (in the bragg creek area) has a few good ones. Heading down 22 south from calgary there's a good number from okotoks south.

No idea why, but up at big hill springs rd @ highway 22 - there's an RV park that's forever packed full... I thought it was an RV dealership the first dozen times I drove by...

If you're into boondocking - and the RV isn't too big, There's a bunch of great spots out in Mclean Creek & Waiparous / Ghost (waiparous) OHV areas. Not recomended around long weekends though...
