I like to use the internet when planning my roadtrips but when it comes to searching online directories for Canadian campgrounds there seems to be very little information, mostly just concentrating on US locations

What websites do you find best for Canadian content?

Hi Npauto,

I find that the provincial governments have tourist guides that list campgrounds. Another source is CAA. Many small towns have teensy RV parks that are largely unadvertised. For boondocking the only site I know that I trust is:

Canada low cost camping

Another way to find campgrounds is to search in google maps with this string (change the city or town to the area for the visit)

Campground loc: Calgary

TrailerLife Directory has always been good to us - yes even for Canada.

Remember to google, at http://www.google.ca/ , click in the circle for pages from Canada

Like "Campgrounds New Brunswick" or "Campgrounds Quebec". These will give you links to cgs with online sites. Then you can ask your questions via their 'contact us' or 800# phone.

& contact each province via "tourism + name of province". I prefer to call for the current year's visitors guide and the provincial map. Provincial maps often have features that commercial maps don't have. Also, I say call because I can mention my favourite activities. & they will include additional booklets on these. For example, historic villages and hiking, but yours might be 'beaches' or places with stuff for kids.

All of these are dependent upon the camggrounds keeping information up to date. & they can do quite a good job of doing so. Plus, if you pick the right time of day, online 'dept. of tourism' staff are often knowledgeable and can help you sort things out.

& I, I took the road less travelled by.

When I am looking for a campground, either in the US or Canada, I go to Google Maps and enter the name of the city closest to where I want to be. When that location comes up, I enter "campgrounds" in the search box and hit "Search Maps." If you want to see more campgrounds(if there are any), you can go to the next page. You can also move the map around in case you want a campground that is away from the city. Then I use rvparkreviews.com to read the ratings (it is good for both Canada and the US). I find this is easier to use than things like the Trailer Life CD, which you also have to buy, and it is more current. Best of all, it is free.

This summer, we found the provincial park campgrounds in Ontario to be wonderful. The official website is quite complete, with a downloadable guide, and the website contained links to individual parks that had their own websites, as well as the reservation network. (We never reserved any spots, however, I can't tell you how that works....we took our chances and had a great time.)
