I'm going from NY to Elizabethtown,PA. I can get there by either taking I-76 or I-78. I've never been on I-78. Does anyone have an opinion as to which is better to use while towing a TT?

if you have to go near the intersection of 61 and 78 that's backed up on a regular basis. I'd avoid that area.

My personal opinion would be to take the turnpike(76). I 78 is terrible from Jersey to 81, either from traffic at intersections or from the terrible road condition. The stretch from 81 to 476 has terrible ruts and washboarded sections that make it unbearable to drive on much less tow a trailer on. You might have to pay $5+/- bucks in tolls to take the pike but it is a much nicer road and your kidneys will thank you.
If you get off the pike at Lebanon Rd(Rt. 72/exit 266?) you could take that to E-town Rd into town, not bad roads to tow on, nice country drive.

Thanks. That's the type of info I'm looking for.

D-Low is correct about I78 being rough. It was really thumping my Subaru on my last drive through there. However, if you're up for several points of interest on 78, check out the Cabela's sporting goods store at the Hamburg exit. The place is awesome! If you are a birder, not far from Cabela's is Hawk Mountain Sanctuary. Excellent raptor watching from mountain peak.

Great call on those two points of interest !!! They almost make up for the bad roads... ( ALMOST ) I have traveled RT 78 a few times in the last few months and it is tolerable if you are not looking to spend extra time and money going 30 miles south to 76 and paying tolls.... Joe

I was on 78 last month and had no problems....Also 80 to 287 to 78 is preferable to NJ TPK to PA TPK in my book.

Thanks for all the replies. If I remember correctly I-76 doesn't have many rest stops or emergency pull off areas. Is I-78 the same?

There should be enough pull offs on the pike many of the "rest stops" are closed unless they make a lot of money. There are a lot of exits along 78 where you can get anything you need in any of the towns along the way.
I would also add, that for the most part the left lane of 78 is in fairly decent shape but if you don't do 70 you will be in somebodies way, meaning if your polite and move into the right lane, you will experience the torturous conditions I mentioned before. You could do one way down and the other way back then you'll know for the next time.

Thanks. I think I'll take I-76.
