Hey, everybody. My husband was recently diagnosed as an insulin-dependent diabetic, and we're planning to hit the road fulltime in about a month. Here in Ontario, insulin is available without a prescription. We'll be travelling through the US, and other parts of Canada, and I'm wondering if insulin can be had without a scrip in most places, or should we get his doctor to write him up one. As insulin only keeps about a month, we can't stock up ahead.

I think that insulin is OTC in the states, but you might want to carry a Rx for syringes and needles.

Get a script, I am pretty sure it is controlled here.

I have purchased insulin and syringes at drug stores in most states and half the Caribbean islands without prescriptions. You just need to make sure you are asking for the correct type of product that you use. Most druggists are very helpful if you don't understand their systems. Works for me.......

We have purchased insulin, syringes and other diabetic supplies over the counter at drug stores in the Florida and Michigan. Just tell the pharmacist what you need, an old vial or packaging will help ensure that you get the same product. Sometimes U.S.and Canadian terminology and measurements are different. Metric??
It will depend on your insurance company, whether or not you are reimbursed for the costs under your plan. But it sure beats coming home just to get medications that ran out or forgot to pack.

If you keep the insulin refrigerated, it is good for far longer than 30 days. Don's is filled for 90 days at a time and the bottles always have an expiration date of at least a year away. As said, you can get insulin & supplies anywhere but whether your insurance company will reimburse you may be a question.

I don't know if it is otc here where I live, I know I get a prescription from my Dr. for the Lantus I use. and I take one shot at night before I go to bed and it lasts all day

The older forms of insulin, such as NPH and Regular are available without a prescription in the States and syringes and needles can be obtained if you sign for them (much like you would have to do to buy Sudafed). However, most diabetics now days are prescribed the Human DNA equivalent forms such as Humalog or Novolog whereas the others are usually pig or beef insulins. The human type poses much less threat for developing antibodies and sensitivites. Personally, I would ask your doctor for a 90 day script with refills and have it filled at a national chain such as Walgreen's which can then check for and provide refills wherever you are. Insulin will keep in the fridge for a long time if unopened. Once opened, you should dispose of it after 28 days.

Don't know about the insulin script but just wondering where you are getting health coverage for out of country with a pre-exisiting condition? We are searching for coverage around a blood pressure issue.

Thanks everyone for your info. It looks like we won't have any problem getting the insulin Frank needs.
Portliz, we don't have any medical coverage other than OHIP, so have been paying for the insulin and other medications out of our own pocket for years (joy of being self-employed). We haven't looked for our out of country coverage yet, but will be talking to our insurance agent about it when we turn off the house insurance coverage (we've sold the house and will be full timing for a while).
