FWIW. I get my Insulin by prescription plan and it comes for 90 days at a time ( 4 10ml vials) in a cooled insulated box. I set one out and use that and keep the rest refrigerated (not frozen) and take it out as required. Sams does sell it across the counter at a reasonable price. If you are entered into their computer system you should have access just about anywhere. A prescription would be good insurance and save any problems. Sams also sells syringes at a much better price than the drugstores I have been to, $12.48 for 100. Most of the other places I have been to want about double (or more) than that.
Good luck, safe travels and happy camping!

You will need a prescription for it in the U.S.,I am a diabetic and have to get a 3 months supply when we travel, have to get a prescription that specifies 90 days or I can't get it. Good luck

bumpy Bumpy is right, and don't just throw them in the trash when you are done with them. Take them to a hospital or clinic where you can properly get rid of them. And don't leave them laying around the coach, especially going through customs! That is where you might need the Rx.

Frank doesn't actually use syringes and needles; his insulin comes in cartridges that load into what looks like a fat pen. The sharps from these and his blood testing are always disposed of carefully, for sure. We've decided to get his doctor to write him a script in any case, even if we probably won't need it -- better to be safe than sorry and it sounds like you need a prescription for it at least in some places.

According to the web page bumpy linked us to,
*1. "In all states new, insulin analogs DO require a prescription. These include Humalog, Novolog, or Apidra, as well as Lantus." and *2. "Older insulins such as regular (R) do not need a prescription except in Alaska. The chart below only specifies if older insulins require a prescription." But on the referenced chart, it leaves Virgina with both a Yes/No, what ever that means.
*1 and *2 quoted from: http://www.isletsofhope.com/diabetes/state-law/state-prescription-laws.html. Note that just like the many web pages concerning RV towing laws, the above web page may also contain misinformation. Rx laws are controled by the individual states and it may be necessary to contact each state for accurate info concerning the law.

I found out that animals use the same type of insulin that humans use when my old dog became diabetic I had to give her shots twice a day..
I simply went to the local drug store in Carson City and told the pharmacist the story and she handed me a 10-pack of syringes with a very short needle ..(1/2"long).. and a bottle of insulin..
No prescription needed for either needles or insulin..

TWO CENTS WORTH
The story goes that a man died and was approached by the Devil who told him that he could buy his soul back for a dollar. The man searched his pockets and could only come up with 98 cent. While begging the Devil to forget the two cent he was short, an Angel happened by and hearing the Devil laughing, asked the man, "Would you mind if I put in my two cents ?" The Devil got so mad that he exploded in a puff of smoke and the man's soul was saved.
The moral: Sometimes putting in your two cents worth makes a difference.

I need a prescription for both. There are a number of types, plus fast acting and long term. I would suggest you buy little foam protective cases for the vials to prevent breakage because you will drop them. Go on line and you will find them at a number of supply houses.

wildflowerhoney wrote: Hey, everybody. My husband was recently diagnosed as an insulin-dependent diabetic, and we're planning to hit the road fulltime in about a month. Here in Ontario, insulin is available without a prescription. We'll be travelling through the US, and other parts of Canada, and I'm wondering if insulin can be had without a scrip in most places, or should we get his doctor to write him up one. As insulin only keeps about a month, we can't stock up ahead.
I just talked to the Pharmacy that I get my Diabetic supplies from...they told me that in California you need a prescription to get the insulin from a US Doctor. If he is using NPH insulin he can buy it OTC, if it's Novolog Humalog Lantus for example he does need a prescription. Here is the odd part the syringes, needles he can buy OTC.
Also Insulin if refrigerated will keep for as long as the expiration date on the bottle.

Our dog was a diabetic too and needed insulin for nine years. He was 16 when we had to put him down. In NY I needed an Rx for both his insulin and the syringes. He took people insulin and had shots twice a day.
To be safe coming from Canada, I would get ahold of a hard copy valid in the US.
