My 2006 dodge 3500 5.9's check engine light came on and stayed on until I refueled. After refueling and restarting the light went off and so far has stayed off. I checked the fuel cap while the light was on and it was tight. Also stopped and restarted the engine several times and the light stayed on until the refueling. Has anyone had this happen?

Thanks

No, but have you pulled the code so you can find out what it pertains to? You can do this with the key, takes a second, and takes all the guesswork out of it. The code will disappear after just normal starting for a few times, unless it is an ongoing issue.

Start in off position. Turn it to run 3x, do not start engine. Codes show up in digital odometer. Have a pencil ready.

Like this:

off-on-off-on-off-on within 5 sec, leave in on position, read codes. It takes a minute or two to do the diagnostic.

Post any code you get here, and I'll look it up for you.

I did as you said and waited 2 minutes and nothing posted. I guess it will only post if the check engine light is on.

What has happened with your truck, is that the fuel cap was not tight, or you filled up the unit while running. This tank is a sealed unit and if the cap is loose or off it will trigger a check engine light. The code would read large leak. By turning off the engine and restarting it will reset it self. General this takes three to six cycles

Did the odometer change from displaying the mileage to "PdonE"? If not, you may not have done it right.

This spring we were heading from Oh to MD, fueled up and about 20miles down the road the check engine light came on. I pulled over and checked the fuel cap-it was tight. The light stayed on, refueled about 1 mile from our destination and the next morning it was off. Ran 2 tankfuls and on the way home fueled up at the same place as we did coming over and within 20 miles the check engine light came on again. Same results after the next tank, the light went off and hasn't been back on since. Have driven about 5k since. I think maybe we got some not up to par fuel As this is the only time that has happened and only following a fillup at this one station. Gary

I bought a code reader for $50 at Autozone. I've only used it once, but it saved me $200 on my Jeep by doing the work myself.
