It doesm't have to be in 5th, just in gear. I use 5th just in case the transfer case goes into gear, that way it's going down the road in 5th not some lower gear, less damage (?). The reason for being in gear may have to do with oil circulation.

I have a 93 yj with an auto trans, to tow it shut it off in park, then shift the transfer case into neutral. Thats what my book says to do, and thats what I'v been doing for for years with no problems
Owner's Manuals, I have heard, can be downloaded from the Jeep website. I have never tried it, don't know if it is true or not.
I have seen them on eBay, though, as well as Amazon.
Helm, Inc. has always been a great source for auto manuals.
