We tow a manual transmission model Fusion and it makes a wonderful tow vehicle.
And as much as I'm not a fan of Consumer Reports, in their blog titled "Ford Fusion – The best car you don’t know about", even they are saying great things about the Fusion.
Just one snip for the above link; "Two more pluses: Not only does the Fusion have excellent crash-test results but it’s also one of the more reliable cars in our annual auto survey. It is more reliable than the ubiquitous Toyota Camry, an honor it’s held since the Camry’s 2007 redesign."
Take a look.
You can also tow a f.w.d. 2010 Fusion 4 down witout any modifications. Doesn't matter what tranny either. Manual or automatic.

Regardless of which new car you are buying, have them show you in the manual where it says it can be towed and what the procedures are.
Also... don't let a dealer sell you a manual trans just because the auto isn't approved for towing. There are several very popular cars with autos that are approved.
Try to imagine the resale of family sedan type car like the Camary with a manual trans. Someday in the future you'll want to sell that car and good luck selling a Camary with a stick.
In my opinion... look for a car that is a popular toad like the Honda CR-V or, if in fact the Ford Fusion AWD is towable 4 down (and it says so in the manual), that would be a good choice.
Remember that you are going to have to mount the towbar equipment to the front of the vehicle so it is going to be evident that the car is or has been towed. If 4-down towing isn't factory approved, they will use that to void everything in the warranty even possibly related to towing.

Lots of demand for family sedans with sticks out there, but extremely hard to find. Many old farts like me looking for them.

I was not aware of that.

I agree - I like a stick too. Actually 3 of the 6 licenced vehicles in our house are manual transmissions.
There are 24 hours in every day - it all depends on how you choose to use them.
