Julie, I just retired from school bus driving on the 30th. of October. I drove my first bus in May of 1960 so I have a little experience on them. School buses are the safest vehicles on the road today. Every window has a steel frame that goes from the chassis frame around to the other side of the frame. The seats are close together, seat backs are higher on newer buses, and there is very little room for children to get tossed around. When you compare a school bus to a city bus don't forget they have bars and supports for standing in city buses that aren't on school buses. I never allowed a student to move while driving. I enjoyed my 49 years of driving. I have driven some buses with seat belts for special ed and they do hit each other with the belts and cause damage to each other.
Glad everyone is OK, but I`m still trying to figure out this figure of speech (snip " I spotted a HUGE buck on my left running hell-bent for leather!") LOL

Like prior poster I also wondered about the hell-bent/leather expression. Figured it was a Wisconsin thing!
Hubby drove schoolbuses while in college and now again since he retired. Lots of changes in those 30+ years in between.
Just as a FYI: Here in NY it is required for ALL schoolbuses to have seatbelts but the only person required to wear them is the driver. The children can put them on but no way is the driver allowed to assist them in doing so as drivers are not allowed to touch children in any way, shape or form -- even to stop a fight on the bus.
The seatbelts are made for adults and are kinda useless for the children anyway. Hubby says he has some children who buckle themselves in but then can still walk across the aisle wearing them. Of course, no standing, walking or changing seats is permitted while bus is in motion.
As another previous poster said, schoolbuses are just about the safest vehicle on the road. Everything is "compartmentalized" and the safest place for child to be is in his/her seat, facing forward. Hubby says the only other vehicle safer than a schoolbus is a cement truck.
Fortunately, he has not had the experience of children using seatbelts as weapons.
Another thing I've learned from hubby is that here in NY no parent is allowed on the schoolbus to bring their child on or off.
I'm curious as to whether or not Wisconsin has similar rules such as the ones I've mentioned here.
