Hey Everyone,
I am purchasing a Salem TT and I had a question on how to go about using a satellite dish on the trailer. If I install DirecTV at my house, can I use it on the trailer? Do I have to buy everything seperate? What does everyone else do?
I have alwsys had cable in my house so I have never had satellite before. I love the great outdoors but I would like to watch the races and football games on the weekends when we are gone.
Thanks in advance!

You just need a extra dish to bring with you and your home receiver…

1. Welcome new member of the forums.
2. Go over the the correct forum for your question "Technology Corner".
3. Use the search feature and search "satellite".
4. Yes, a gazillion folk use there home satellite while camping. It means you take a receiver from home, get you a dish from somewhere (usually very cheap), some coax, a "stand" of some sort for the dish (look at the PVC homemade stands, they work really well)
5. Learn to "aim" the dish, and voila... satellite on the road just like at home.
6. happy camping.

We have direct tv service and get our major networks (ABC, CBS, NBC & Fox) out of New York as you will only recieve you local stations for a limited mileage from your home. RVrs and Truckers can get the majors anywhere for an extra fee but you must choose your stations to be from New York or Los Angeles. Since we spend most of our time in the Eastern half of the country, we chose New York. A few years ago Dish had problems and you could not get this service but that may have changed. Contact your satellite provider for info. We are full timers so getting the major networks anywhere was more important for us.

We take a box out of one of the guest bedrooms in the house and put in the trailer. I have a portable dish with a single head that I bought at Camping World. We do not get HD with it for the TT. The other thing is we tend to park in wooded areas and some times it is impossible to get a signal. I carry a 100’ of cable. The local channels go away when you get very far from home.

I use my TT as a 4th bedroom, so I have an extra receiver ($4.95 Per Mo.). My dish I got from a friend that was moving. The Tripod is an old sprinkler stand. As far as hooking up the sat to the outside receptical of your TT; If there is a splitter installed in you TT, your sat will not work. You'll need rewire it, or bring the coax in a window. My splitter was behind my sound system, so that made the rewire easy. Good luck.

How do you get the dish adjusted to get signal. I remember I had Direct TV years ago and it was a true pain moving that dish around to get signal. They would use a compass and get signal strength from rotating the dish. I think a weekend would be over before I could dial that thing in, unless they have changed over the years.

I installed one of thse on our TT takes about 30 seconds to find the satellite. The elevation is the most critical (it comes with the elevation gauge)
When camping out here in the west it is pretty easy to find a clear spot to align with the sat. plus I use solar, clear above is GOOD
Tried the tripod in the past, had nothing but frustration finding the satellite.
At 4.98 per month I leave the receiver mounted in the trailer

We ordered our trailer with an auto satelite dome on the roof. We have two receivers we leave in the trailer. One in the bedroom and one in the living room. Turn on the receiver, turn on TV, turn on dome. Dome searches for signal, locks signal in. Turn off dome, watch TV. Takes about a minute for lock in. In those cases where the dome is blocked by a tree, we carry a portable dish and 100' of cable with in line signal finder. Better than a portable dish however, would be the "Cube" which is similar to the auto dome with auto search. We use some early model Hughes DirectTV receivers in the trailer that work fine, just no High Def. But, when you're camping you have to "rough it" sometimes.
