We are planning our first trip to the RGV this winter. Are fleas and ticks a problem and if so what is recommended for our dog for prevention? -- Chuck

Ticks are the cause for Lyme Disease. Don't know where RGV is but here
is a map from the American Lyme Disease Foundation.
I use K9 Advantix on all my dogs monthly.
It repels and kills ticks, fleas and mosquitoes also repels biting flies,
kills chewing lice and is water proof.
For ways to protect yourself, visit the Tick Encounter Resource Center.

Not sure what RGV is, but it's obviously warmer than South Dakota in the winter.
We use Advantix on our dogs. We also use household roach killer (Boric Acid has no poisons) and sprinkle in on the carpet... then use a broom to brush it as deeply into the carpet as possible... then lightly vacuum so that the chemical doesn't sit on top of the carpet. This will kill ticks, fleas, roaches... anything that has an outside skeleton.

Don't know what RGV is? I guess they have never heard of the Rio Grand Valley of Texas for snowbirds.....

I'd recommend either Advantix or Frontline Plus. I hope some members who have wintered in Texas or live in the Rio Grande Valley area can give you some experiences.

Ticks, Fleas and things of the ground are why we don't let our cats out on the ground. We use a Kitty Kat Kabana. They are kept off the ground, but can still enjoy the sights, sounds, smells and fresh air of being outdoors. Too bad they don't have such a thing for dogs. Well, I guess a cat size dog is no issue.

Our cats use the easily hung, external window-mounted room for RVs so indoor cats can enjoy outdoors safe from animals & insects http://www.katkabana.com

Is Frontline Plus about the same as K9advantix? If the K9 is better I may switch for my Jazz! Bill

Our dogs are on Revolution and we have never had fleas, ticks - this will be our 8th year in the Valley. Although Sam cat was never outside (except once accidentally) she was on Revolution, too.
See ya' down the road!
