I have a hone theater package with AM/FM radio, CD and DVD and other goodies. I like listening to local radio stations and CD's. Problem is I either need shore power or run the generator. I am thinking of buying an inverter but wiring it will be a nightmare the way the rig is built - probably have to go with some surface wiring which I don't want to do OR I can purchase a 12V vehicle sound system and install it. What do you guys do?
BTW - firs time Iv'e ever posted - hope it works

Hi winty2009,

Purchase a small sine wave inverter and place it as near the battery bank as possible. Run a wire from the inverter to the main breaker box. Put in a sub panel for the entertainment system and use the existing wiring in your RV to power your sound system.

Be sure to try the inverter first to make sure that it doesn't cause interference--particularly when running a vcr.

you can get a better 12v car stereo than what you have. capable of playing mp3, wma, aux input, ipod ready, remote control, 4 line display, and dual zone so you can listen to 2 different sources in 2 different places, like dvd inside music outside or in another room. all with a smaller footprint more power and better quality sound. i have a kenwood excelon 7xx in my truck and trailer

A 300w inverter and an automatic transfer switch can power one string of outlets easily. You can connect it behind the distribution panel if there is any space.

Inverter has other benefits like charging cell phones laptops or other small items.

Go to an online source like Crutchfields.com and see what they have to offer. Adding a quality head unit and a 100 watt amp will produce ear shattering sounds if that is what you want.

I would go the inverter route, even if you just run an extension cord from it to your home theatre.

I did the 12 volt upgrade route on mine. Go to Crutchfield website as mentioned above as they have lots of info there. Plans b would be the inverter route and as mentioned watch for interference. You may also want to check your speakers as most that come with the units are not very good. I also upgraded to a nice set of Infinity's and sounds like at home not like most trailer systems. If you are doing the upgrade make sure you check all the links as if only part is upgraded you may not be happy.

Inverter, and pure sine wave, not modified.

The by-far easiest way to do this is to plug your coach shore cord into the inverter. Only caveats are.. turn off your converter, and put HW and refer on gas.

IF the ONLY thing you want to run on 12vdc is the sound system.. I'd go with a 12 volt system (Car stereo)

If, however you think you might wish to run other stuff.. Then the advice to get a TRUE SINE WAVE (also called Pure Sine Wave) inverter is a good one.

DO not use MSW with an AM radio.. As MSW inverters usually do that in.. and may cause Hum on any audio system.. But a True Sine wave.. Well the power is as clean as or cleaner than what comes out of the hole in the wall at home (usually cleaner)

I have been away for awhile which is why I have been slow to thank all of you for your comments. Because of your comments I am going to install an inverter and a 12vdc audio system - best of both worlds the way I see it. Thanks again.
