We are trying to get from Flagstaff to Zion without any surprises of tunnels or extreme elevation drops or changes. Planning to take 89 out of Flagstaff to 89A; catching Hwy 389 at Fredonia going into Utah on Hwy 59 and coming back on Hwy 9 to Springdale just outside the park.

Does anyone know what these roads are like?

Thanks

You're describing the scenic route...a good thing. You'll climb up to Jacob Lake (the entry to the north rim of Grand Canyon) then back down to Fredonia. Curves and elevation involved and will slow you down, but nothing serious. The rest is flat and easy. You'll drop down a benign two mile grade into Hurricane. I like this route.

That's the route we would take, too! Enjoy your trip.

When hauling the 5th wheel, we take 89 to Kanab via Page. At Kanab, we drop south to Fredonia to pick up 389 to Hurricane. This avoids the curvy upgrade/downgrade through Jacob Lake.

johnna told me that route a few years back and we have done it many times. 89A is fine but hillier and twistier.

Truth is....89 is easier (except when headwinds around), 89A more scenic. I think we all agree.

I'm a big fan of the 89A route up through Jacob Lake. There is a nice USFS CG at the intersection of 89A and 67. Beautiful spot, $16 a night and you are only a couple of hours from Zion. From 89, 89A is one of the most scenic drives in the west. You will climb to 8000' but the road is good and the scenery better.
