I don't think the weight of the load is a issue for the hitch.
Barney was referring to the hitch receiver as opposed to the WD hitch.
The receiver should have two tongue weight ratings -- one for "weight carrying" and one for "weight distributing".
If the rating for "weight carrying" is less than your eventual loaded tongue weight, then you should use a WDH.
Obviously, you are suggesting you do not want to use a WD hitch and quite possibly you may not need one, but it's easy to find out by loading up your TT for camping, hitching up and giving her a test run, preferably simulating as many towing conditions (interstate speeds, high or crosswinds, etc) that one can encounter while towing. If you are OK with the comfort level you experienced on your test run, then you have your answer. I've done it and definitely prefer the comfort level provided by our WD/SC hitch plus it takes less than a couple of minutes to engage thanks to our power tongue jack.
if you don't need it then its a just a pain in the #@$%^%$ the extra weight, noise incontinent,storage and there not cheap ,check you specs use only if needed
I dont use one but i upgraded much of the rear suspension and hitch setup with my truck. I have an 2.5" 18k/1800 pound tongue weight w/o distrubution hitch on the truck and use 18k ballmounts. My setup is much stonger than any WDH on the market
With my current dually I only need WD because of the receiver rating (700 lbs WC, 1300 lbs WD)
I do not torque the WD hitch down like I did with the half-ton, just enough to put tension on the bars. Dual friction sway control, Ready to rock and roll.
I suspect that for a HD truck the WD hitch is more of a dampener when going over expansion joints, etc. unless the hitch weight is crazy heavy.
