Hey all I'm curious. I have a 33' 5er that weighs 11233 loaded, 1073pin. I am looking at a 2004 gmc 1500hd with 6.0 auto 4.10 gears. I camp mainly within a couple hundred miles from home and my mountain camping days are over (I think). I feel that will be enough truck but I thought I would ask anyway.I know I will be a little overloaded but for short trips I think I'll be ok. Before you start bashing me I currently have a 2007 dodge cummins for a tv but due to a change in my economy I have to downsize. The camper is paid for the truck is NOT, It's gotta go. Thanks in advance.

That is a quite a bit more than your 1500 is rated for. I would not recommend it. Remember most accidents happen close to home.

Sounds more like a 2500......but the 1500HD will pull it. The gas mileage is gonna be the killer on that truck. If it has the Auto style transfer case....you can count on about 6-7mpg towing and around 10 empty!

"A little overloaded???" Oh yea.... That'll be enough truck alright. If you only plan on hauling a load of pine straw!!! Why are you asking this question? You already know the answer and no one in their right mind is going to tell you, "Oh sure, you'll be just fine". If the correct tow vehicle has to go, then downsize the 5'er as well.

I'm curious? How do you manage a pin weight of only 1073 lbs with a 33' 5'er weiging 11233 lbs? I'm betting you're already overweight on your 3/4 ton trucks single axle to start with. You may be within the trucks tow rating but how bout it's GVWR? Our 30' 5'er weights in at 14,340 lbs with a pin weight of just over 3200 lbs. From your profile pic, the ole Dodge looks like she's squatin pretty bad! Good luck.

Happy camping!!! See y'all down the road!!!

Illegal and unsafe (for you, your family, everyone else on the road) isn't a question of distance.

Just over #1000 pin weight on an #11,000 5th wheel seems a bit light to me.. Heck, my #5000 TT has a #700 tongue weight..

But, whatever... The Chevy 1500 HD of that era is essentially a 2500 truck.. (just a little lower GVWR). Probably only has a semi float 8 lug rear axle, but that's better than what they put in the 'standard' 1500 trucks..

It's your truck, so you know it's performance and payload capability, so if it looks like it'll work for you, how are a bunch of anonymous internet, non experts, going to know??

Do what feels right for you and that's probably going to be best all around..

Good luck with whatever you decide..

Mitch

My 34 foot 8,000 lb. travel trailer has a tongue weight of 1,200 lb. I suspect you're reading those brochure weights that have NOTHING to do with actual weight.

Even a non-weight-enforcement officer like myself is a bit iffy on this proposal...

Any chance of holding out for 1-ton SRW or DRW in the same price range as the 1500hd you're considering?

1500hd with a 4.10 is only rated for 10,200. Too much trailer and not enough truck.
