DCREW is your dish a one LNB? When I went from my single LNB to my HD manual dish with 3LNB it got alot more difficult to fine tune. Which is why I finally got a Dish Tailgater. I suspect the phone App works like a compass?

Ahhh ok i am not using HD...just at the reg. house. And there is a special dish there. The iPhone app uses the phones internal compass and displays the satellites on the camera screen (101west is what i was pointing for) as you rotate your phone towards the sky. I'll see if I can get you a screen shot. It more or less helps to make sure you have a clear unobstructed view of the satellite in the sky.Screen shot of how app works from our campsite.

I just watched a youtube video on it. Pretty neat.... It will help you with line of site and if you got a tree in your way that would be helpful.

You'll be aiming that SD dish with nothing more that a compass heading and the TV tone in no time. I just wish DTV would put the tone back in the HD receivers. That would make HD much easier.

Okay... So for the hell of it, I tried out your theory as the app was guaranteed to work in the "boonies". I am happy to state that after turning OFF the network connections, wifi and cell data... And restarted the app, I was able to find the same info as before and locate the satellite with elevation, azimuth, and tilt values. Apparently, the app does NOT require 3G service.
Just so ya know.....
Not bad for a 1.99 app

It is quite neat... I would guess it knows where I'm at by the internal gps built into most smartphones. The app also worked on my iPad2. The values displayed were spot on with what the directv box said I needed according to my current zip code. I guess it would be most helpful in determining a good spot to put the dish without any obstructions. Example...if I stand behind a tree it shows the sats in the sky over the trees. Just keep moving until you have a clear view of the sky. I would only suggest buying the $9.99 version and not having to deal with the advertisements that pop up occasionally, but if that dosent bother you, go for the cheap one. I'm sure it's available for android users.

I believe the iPhone uses GLONASS. Russian GPS.

I guess location determination depends on the app. My Droid won't do much sans internet.
