We have literally hundreds of F-350 Crew cab 4x4 long bed trucks powered by the 5.4 engine, from 2004 onward. They are equipped with snow plows in the winter and tow 27 foot box trailers set up to carry landscaping equipment in the summer, usually weighed down quite heavily. These trucks are utterly reliable. They may not be climbing big hills at 70mph but then again they are fine for our needs. They will be replaced as they hit time/mileage life limits with F-350 6.2 gas engine trucks.

It is a bread and butter Ford product.

And well made.

I can leave my 5.4 in the garage for a year, charge the battery up, and it fires up right away.

True,It doesn't compare too the CTD that I own,but for 5K for a very nice truck I couldn't turn it down. After all I could use another truck. Its a 2000 model and has 3.73 gears. Also came with lockout hubs from the factory.I've ordered a class v hitch, towing mirrors, etc.so I shall see how it tows my current TT once I install the hitch.Might use the truck to tow locally when we camp.I will have to modify my receiver about 4in due to the truck sitting higher than the CTD but still should be OK with the dodge too.

I towed a 7500 lb fifth wheel and quickly upgraded to diesel. Towing lighter should be ok. And i had my f250for 10 years with no problems.

Depends on what you want to do with it. I have owned two F-250 SuperDuty's with the 5.4L and towed with them. If it is a pre-2005 it has the 2v 5.4L which made 265 HP and 350 ft lbs torque and will be good up to about 7500 lbs and be a very stable towing platform.

The 2 valve is a very durable engine that can be pushed quit hard.

3 valve have more peak HP, but I think (not sure) it also have the dreaded spark plug problem.

So it is which problem you wish to have --- I have had good luck with the 5.4 2 valve towing up to 7,000lbs on a E platform.

Any spark plug issues with the 5.4L were rare and limited to earlier years. The 3v version never had the blown plug issue. The 3v version had more HP and Torque than the 2v version. The beauty of the 5.4L in spite of it's small size was it delivered 90% of it's torque below 2500 RPM's. I have owned and towed with both versions in the F-250 platform. I never did a single repair to either. The 2v version I towed a 26' TT weighing 7500 quite handily. The 3v version I towed a 9k TT without any issues. It is amazing to me how the "spark plug" thing is so blown out of proportion. The blown plug issue was more prevalent in early 6.8L motors (still rare) but limited to a couple of years. The two 5.4L trucks I owned were bulletproof and served me well.

In my estimation, it won't get out of it's own way. I once had an F250 4X4 with the towing package and a 302. Worst truck I ever had for power/ability. JMHO

Not even close to a valid comparison. The 5.4 would be more comparable to the old 351, although the 5.4 is much more powerful.

5.4 with 4.10 gears should pull respectably. Less so with 3.73 gears, but still should be able to handle a trailer that's not too heavy. This is provided the tires are the stock diameter.

The spark plug problem was in the '99-'02 V10 and 5.4, I believe.

Thanks for the info. It simply amazes me that it is cited as a reason to "watch out" when purchasing a 12 year old truck.

I traded my fourth Cummins Ram for a Hemi powered 2500HD. Did great for 120k miles and I traded it for a 5.4L F250. It also does a fine job. The 5.4L has a tad more grunt but the Hemi takes it at high rpm. We run the same speeds towing we ran with our SO Cummins Rams, just one gear lower in similar scenarios. The Cummins shifted on every hill from O/D to direct. The Hemi and 5.4L shift on every hill from direct to 2nd with the Hemi and 3rd with the 5.4L. If I were deaf and had no tach, I wouldn't know the difference. I have no experience with the 2V 5.4L.
