Pulling away from the pumps at a Pilot truck stop. Didn't feel a thing but something looked funny when I parked the RV back in the truck section. Driver's side corner of endcap clipped the barrier at the pump island. Cracked fiberglass, endcap torn away from wall.
Checked Trailer Life directory for nearest campground to wait for adjuster call on Tues. Closest listed was a KOA. NO!!!!!!!!
Went online to rvparkreviews and found a county park closer and much cheaper. Thank goodness for the Internet.

I've seen those metal barriers total a rig already at less than 10 MPH. Years ago we just had a trash can at the ends. They never did any real damage but were a pain to pick up. I think this poles and horse shoe pipes should be removed from the islands at all service stations. They've cost thousands in damage everyday.

Having hauled gasoline and diesel to service stations, I will be the first to disagree. I actually had a guy run over the Vapor Recovery Drop Elbow I was unloading through at a station. Even had cones out so he would not drive into it or the hose. Gas stations are the most dangerous places I know of. Can't tell you the number of times I had people try to drive over the hose I was using to deliver gasoline.

When I wrote insurance the cheapest places to insure were Mom and Pops with gas pumps and gas stations because of safety regulations.
The barriers are now required but do a lot of damage. There are very few of them that are unmarked, unless they have afresh coat of paint. or event bent. The bent ones did their job the others did a job on vehicles.
Wife, in Tucson kept edging closer, at less than a mile per hour, because you can't see belt line, on the vehicle or even the end, of the hood, in the vehicle and sure enough did a nice yellow paint smear on the left front fender.

I've never seen one of those posts jump out in front of a vehicle. They're there to keep folks from running over the pumps. As the OP said, he didn't even know he hit it until he parked. Pretty sure the station operator would rather that we tear up our RVs than his pump. Can't say that I blame him.

Well, I didn't expect to start a debate about the merits of the pump barriers. In this particular instance, that barrier did NOT accomplish its primary job. I was already past the pump. If I had started my turn 5 ft earlier, the tail end of my 5er would have hit the pump.

The travel centers could do a better job of parking lot design and NOT allow any parking in the path where RVs are departing an island.

That is why I always try to use the outside island pump and turn left exiting the island. Sometimes I have to wait for the outside pump to become available.
