Dryers outlets in houses have been using 4-prong receptacles for a long time now.

If you need a 50 amp RV outlet this is the best option so everything is available in the future:

Sorry for the mishap to your RV.

This happened to me just 4 months ago.
I even went out and bought the damn electrician an RV PLUG with the wiring instructions printed right on the back of the plug.

AND he STILL wired it for 220.

Micro toast.
All my computer power surge cords and plugs burnt.
A/C up in smoke.
All the bulbs burnt black.
Coach battery boiled out and burning, because the converter was still working BUT....
Converter still worked but would find out later it would cook the battery to boiling. Had to replace the converter too. Opened it up and one of the capacitors looked like someone shot it with a 22.
When you have the converter tested make the repair guy 'leave the tester on' more than a nano second and you will see it start racing up to 16+.

Likened to closing the barn door after the horse is already out but
here is a link to page for RV Electric. PRINT and hand to this to ANYONE that is going to wire a shore station for you. And then STAND there and make sure they follow each and every word of the instructions.

Did he install a NEMA 14-50R? That should be slam dunk for even a novice.

Terry,
About two weeks ago we went over this ground on another group in this forum.
It was the Class C group, but that does not matter.

Search for: Smoked The Converter

Summary: The converter was completely toast. If anything other than the converter was on, it is probably toast. Even things like a television and a microwave that don't seem to be powered up may be damaged. This guy lucked out though.

Good Luck Guy

The electrician didn't know what he was doing. He should pay for repairs.
Depending what was on at the time. Microwave, probably toast, refer possibly toast. Converter possibly toast.

Unless you told him it was a 50A rv 120/240V connection, it isn't his fault. If you just said 50A that indicates a dedicated 240V 50A service not a 4 wire 120V/240V connection.

I was very specific about a plug for my RV. He asked if I wanted a 30 or 50 amp. I said if possible I would go for a 50 amp. When I saw the three prong I was wrong to assume that it would just take my 3 prong adapter. I've researched the subject on how Bighorns are wired and it appears there are two different circuits. Maybe that is why the TV, furnace are ok. T

sorry but you really were NOT very specific. What you should have said is I want a 50A 120V/240V 4 wire circuit and specified the exact receptical you needed.

Call the hack and if he won't stand behind his work, then call a lawyer. A letter from the laywer should get his attention.

There is no difference between an RV and a range 50 amp receptacle.
They are 120/240 four wire.

I don't mean to hijack this thread, but for my education, did the OP or anyone else who had this experience have an EMS product like this one installed? click

An EMS system will not normally protect against miss wired systems. They are designed to protect against faults.
