This question reminds me of a somewhat goofy story. In 1975, I was a newly-married 22-year-old who decided that it might be interesting to finish my last two years of college in California, instead of the suburban Philly area I'd lived in all my life. Plus, the new bride and I would be away from the influences of either set of parents. So we loaded up a mid-size U-Haul truck (after loading a trailer so heavy it lifted the front end of our car when I dropped it on the hitch ball...) and set off West. Completely uneventful trip, apart from the 55-MPH governor making Nebraska, the Bonneville Salt Flats and Northern Nevada seem like several months. We stopped near Lake Tahoe on our last night, and I'd heard that Donner Pass was a bit tricky for trucks, etc so I decided to forgo the feared incline, and headed down US 50 from South Lake Tahoe instead. I was a dumb kid who didn't know any better...
It may have been improved in the last 35 years, but back then, it was 60 or so miles of back and forth, switchback after switchback, white-knuckle, 2nd-gear-I-hope-the-engine-doesn't-blow-up-why-do-the-brakes-smell-so-bad until we finally came down out of the ski slopes, and fell transfixed by the golden fields of California around Placerville.
Oddly, it worked out fine because the college housing we were living in was right along Rt 50 by Sacramento State. We rolled in around noon and all was fine.
Of course, we had reason to use I-80 to Reno a couple of times in the next 18 months while we lived there, and it was, as noted, a piece of cake compared to US 50.
Unfortunately, my wife was extremely homesick so 10 minutes after my last senior final exam, we were headed back east. This time, Allied Van Lines took the junk, and we drove the Malibu...

Lube your steps with "white lithium grease". Look in Walmart's auto section. About $2 a spray can. White lithium grease is what Kwikee, the step manufacturer, uses.
