We are leaving from home in western Oklahoma in less than 5 weeks for a 6 week trip to Alaska. Celebrating our 40th wedding anniv. a year late. We will be traveling in a GMC Sierra towing our 17' Casita spirit Deluxe. Reading all the updates and suggestions and have reached the conclusion we will have an awesome trip no matter where we go or what we do. Wondering about which credit card is most widely accepted in Canada or will cash be the most acceptable?
Have lots more questions but have found most of them answered on this forum.
Thanks to all who share their trip experiences!

Visa and Mastercard everywhere. Get about $100 Canadian at the border for coffe and donuts.
American cash works usually but takes time as store usually has to call for exchange rate, and may charge a bit over that. Seems fair, ever try to use Canadian money in USA, LOL.
Have a FUN time, nice folks up there.

Visa and Mastercard are about evenly accepted, then there's American Express. Other than those three there are not too many places that accept any other Cards.

Cash is accepted everywhere except many government offices. Go figure.
As for the credit cards, I'm assuming it's no different than when we head south with ours. I've never been told that I can't use one. I've heard folks say that some of your southern banks charge fees for using your cards in Canada.
Anyway, honk as you're passing through.

Be sure to notify your credit card carrier that you will be traveling outside of the US. Sometimes card usage outside your normal area will result in the company temporarily suspending your card until they can contact you to verify it is actually you using the card. That can be difficult if you have shut off your cell phones to minimize foreign usage charges on the phones.
We have used Visa & Master Card without any problems.
It is also a good idea to contact your insurance company to get a Canadian Proof of Insurance card - believe it is called a Canada Non-Resident Inter-Provincial Motor Vehicle Liability Insurance Card.
Good luck and enjoy your trip.

Can't go wrong with Visa or Mastercard. Amex is widely used in and around cities/big box stores; oddly enough, Amex is the only card accepted at Costco (at least here in Quebec). Walmart will take Discover cards as well as the other cards.

Thanks! We already have Visa and Mastercard but will contact to make sure we can use them in Canada. I was looking for a "cash rewards" card and American Express has a pretty good one as does Discover but not sure they are accepted everywhere. Might try one of the new ones but good to know we have our Visa or Mastercard as standby. And it's good to know we can use them about anywhere so we won't have to carry alot of cash or make exchange for cash.
Looking forward to this trip! Already been to most points North in lower 48 USA so Canada and Alaska is our destination and coming back via West coast to see what we have time to see there.

Discover card acceptance is very limited up here from what I have seen.

In addition to notifying your CC company that you're traveling out of the country, ask them what their exchange fee is when used outside the US. Most charge a small percentage on top of whatever the currency exchange rate is. We always use our Capital One Visa card outside the US because it does not charge an added fee.
