Colter Bay, not the RV Resort, campground usually has sites available, Gros Verde is dry camping and I don't think that is ever full, but it is first come first serve.

Check out Atherton Lake CG in the Gros Ventre national forest, east of the Tetons. Beautiful area, easy drive to the national park. Here is a view of the Tetons at sunset from our campsite in Atherton:

Don't know -- maybe 30 feet? The ranger in Jackson would know for sure.

We were at Gros Ventre for three nights last week. It's early so only about 20-30 sites were occupied. Campground volunteer said that they only filled 4 nights last year. You should be OK with an early afternoon arrival. Keep an eye out for Moose along the Gros Ventre river on the way in.

Atherton Creek is a nice location, but a bit out of the way. We were last there in 2010 and the last few miles of road going there was in very bad shape.

You can get a site without reservations at Colter Bay campground (not the RV park next door) or at Gros Ventre campground closer to Jackson. We always arrive in the morning and have never had a problem getting a site. Of course, both are dry camping. They have about 300 sites.

We camped at Gros Ventre in July 2011 for 5 nights. The place never filled up and some sites were closed, under construction. While walking around the campground it looked like they were converting some of those construction sites over to electric. These were the first loops left & right of the entry road.
