wow, 8 Ecoboost owners posting in here. Odly enough, not a single post about the bogus overheating problem I keep reading so much about, well, at least on RV.net.

Did some looking into that a while back. It appeared to be one person posting the same story on several forums. Could be bogus, or a one off. IIRC, he said he was in Az and the outside temp was very high, and he was climbing a grade when it happened.

He was also using 87 octane and kept pushing it when engine temps rose instead of slowing down and grabbing a gear, forcing the engine into limp mode. He later reported that, when climbing a similar grade in similar temperatures, but with 91 octane in the tank, he didn't have any problems. I suspect he also slowed down a bit and downshifted. This guy was also towing at close to the capacity of the truck. Ford recommends using higher octane in the Ecoboost when pulling heavy loads. The Ecoboost can handle the job but one has to be reasonable what one asks of it.

I am in the middle of my third camping trip with my EB. I am towing a 35 foot Prime Time LaCrosse at just under 8000 pounds my gross is just over 14000. So far on this trip I have gone 950 miles. I am relatively new to the RV towing and have been really impressed with the EB performance. I am currently averaging 10.1 MPG on this trip which included going through the mountains of NC and Tn. I can maintain 55 to 60 with acceleration available if needed on any grade I have encountered. I have found that at 55 MPH the truck will run at 1500-1600 RPM and that I can improve my gas mileage by downshifting to 5th to bring it up to 1800-1900 RPM range. Unloaded the truck will do about 22 to 23 MPG at 55 MPH but the low rear end (3.73) really affects the gas mileage above that. At 70 MPH it will drop back to just barely maintaining 20 MPG and continues to drop as speed increases.

I discovered the same thing on the last trip. Dropping into 5th and getting into the 1700-1900 rpm range vs the 1500-1700 worked much better for me. I run 3:55s instead of your 3.73s.

Picking up our new Eco with Max Tow (11,300lbs)and HD payload (2,600lbs) options next week. Tough to convince owners with 3/4 and 1 ton trucks that this truck is spec'd to tow!
We are looking at fifth wheels that will come in between 8500-9000lbs loaded and ready to tow. Any worries?????

Doering, 7-8k dry 5th wheels should be good. Try to find one with a lower tongue weight, say under 1400 pounds dry. The hitch will be 150-250 pounds plus you and any family in the cab.

The Ecoboost will have no problem with the RV.

Where did you get the 2,600 lbs from? Is it from Ford's brochure / build & price page? If so, then expect the final number to be (quite a bit) lower, as you'll need to subtract all options.

This is my yellow sticker on a similarly featured truck...

One guy on the F150 forum said he researched this pretty thoroughly and narrowed his choice to a Palomino Puma 295KBH. Here's a link if you want to read more: http://www.f150forum.com/f38/2012-fx4-pulling-our-new-5th-wheel-camper-158875/

Cool! Lots of room on the payload even with options.

Yeah, yours is similar to mine in terms of options, except that mine is a 4x4. So the 4WD option costs me about 200 lbs then, as my payload sticker says 2,238 lbs. Interesting.
BTW, you blacked out your VIN in one spot and left it uncovered in the other, LOL. That's how I saw your window sticker & options. But I don't think it matters at all, everybody can read your VIN through the windshield anyway.
