Chuck, you may want to read the warnings on the pumps. "No open flames, sparks, or smoking within 25 feet of pumps". I believe this is Federal Law. To each their own.
Wolfe10 and others are giving you very good advice.

Wolfe10 and others are giving you very good advice. NFPA fire code adapted by almost every state and community in this country. And yes, our propane operated refrigerators are considered to have a open flame. But propane operated motor vehicle engines are not considered to have a open flame.

Guess I have just been lucky so far, don't turn anything off and leave genny running. But than I see people pumping gas while smoking all the time. Not saying it is safe, but I don't use the Propane, run off genny.

Hauled gasoline to stations for years and have seen a lot of really stupid people, but few that were smoking. 2 or 3 stations a day, 6 days a week for over 20 years. I always wanted a excuse to go over and push the fire extinguisher button. I did threaten to take the tire billy after a smoking drunk who was bugging me while I was unloading one night.

Turn off Generator, Main engine and battery disconnect switch (AUX) (ON mine this means press the STORE side of the switch)
This last act kills the fridge, and water heater (not that I run the water heater on the road) And the Furnace (If on).
Once you have LEFT THE PUMP AREA, re-connect batteries and if you must crank up genny.
One other note: I did that once when getting propane,, and the dang thing would not turn back on (Fixed it later for $0.00)
Nothin adds excitment like something that is none of your business

If I'm in a new area, I will scout the area to fill up when I'm ready to leave, if I haven't done so before stopping. I don't turn off any thing unless filling up with propane.

A cigarette doesn't get hot enough to ignite gasoline (no, not even puffing it). LIGHTING the cigarette is a different story.
I'm thinking the engine off thing is more about static electricity than anything else. Sparks right at the nozzle from static is the usual cause. I shut off my gennie only because the exhaust pipe is straight under the gas door. I never even thought about the fridge. Shutting off both ac's and the gennie is enough of a pain. Besides, I'm not too sure the exhaust pipe isn't hot enough to boil the gas into a super-explosive mixture AFTER shut-off. If the fumes can reach under and over 8 feet to blow up the fridge... Heck, you'd have to say it deserves to be rewarded with a big boom.
The biggest thing is walking around and building static in you and then grabbing the nozzle. I keep my hand resting on the camper, the pump, or the nozzle.

Are you sure? Every movie I've ever seen with an explosion started with a lit cigarette and a puddle of gas.

The statement is absurd. The law and requisite signage is quite clear and despite what some folks here think, applies to everyone. No smoking or open flames of ANY kind and shut off your motor (hint, hint: a generator is a motor).
