Hi everyone, I am new to the website, I don't have a travel trailer as of yet. Looking to purchase a used travel trailer. My Jeep Wrangler 4 door has a total towing capacity of 3600 lbs. I am looking to purchase a travel trailer with a weight of 2100 lbs. Would my Jeep be able to pull this trailer or do I have to go even lighter? What modifications would I have to make? Any information would be greatly appreciated!

howdy and welcome to the forum.

Are the tires on the Wrangler OEM or oversize. Those big tires can severally cut towing power in a small engine.

What size engine ??

Is the tranny a auto or manual ??

My 2011 2 door Wrangler has trouble pulling itself. Maybe you have lower gears or different engine. I pulled an Aliner with a '06 Rubicon fairly easily. It weighed about 2000#. Got a whopping 9 mpg. Please don't take this as a new member bashing Jeep. I have had four and love Wranglers.

Back in my JEEP days I never had much luck towing anything big at all. they just don't have the rear-end and gearing to do this I guess... The ones that tried it ended up destroying their Wrangler jeeps in no time... Replacing gears and suspensions...

Having said that I have towed a 5x8 trailer setup with my Wrangler Jeeps much like in this photo and done a many of off-road TENT camping adventures all over the north country of AZ and even here in VA up along the Blue Ridge mountain runs...

I suspect you wont have good luck beefing your Wrangler up to safety tow anything bigger than a small trailer... It may be different with the newer Jeeps but not so with 90s Jeep wranglers.

No way my current 99TJ Jeep wrangler would safely pull my loaded 4200lb OFF-ROAD trailer shown in my profile picture below...

Needs more information from you first before anyone can answer your questions.

Is 2100lbs the dry weight of the trailer or loaded to camp? You can easily add a 1000lbs to a TTs dry weight with options and gear.

How many people and stuff do you plan on putting in the Jeep? All the weight inside uses up payload and reduces towing ability.

Does your Jeep have a towing package? Hitch, wiring, 7 pin plug, transmission cooler? You will definately need to add a brake controller and will want a transmission cooler if not equipped.

If I were you I would stick with a smaller pop up or maybe a teardrop trailer under 2500lbs loaded. You'd be hard pressed to find any full size TT under that weight, and the wind resistance would kill you.
I had a neighbor who bought a 17' Rockwood Roo hybrid and towed it with his new Wrangler 4 door. It struggled and blew the tranny the first summer. He now tows it with his Caravan instead.

I towed my R-POD 5000 miles last summer from north Alabama to New Mexico, Arizona, Utah and Colorado and back. The trailer weights around 2100 lbs. My Jeep, 2011 JKU Rubicon, did ok but what really slows me down is the frontal area of the trailer. Just had the standard tow package plus I installed a brake controller, highly recomended, and 7-pin plug for the trailer brakes and 12-volt power. Mine is an automatic transmission and the overdrive only worked on level ground. Only place I didn't tow this was up thru Durango, Silverton, Telluride area, had a base camp in Cortez. The new 2012's have a lot more power but haven't seen any reviews of any one towing with it yet. Good luck with your choice. I would still make the same trip with my setup if I had to.

I wouldn't go any heavier. You really want dry weight no more than 2000 lbs for your Wrangler.

Likely your JEEP tongue weight capacity is 360# MAXIMUM. Not the receiver, the VEHICLE. You need at least 13% of the fully loaded TT weight on the tongue. Thus your maximum FULLY LOADED TT weight would be 2770#. If you add 1000# like most folks, you're looking for a TT with a UVW of 1770#.

Wow, I would never have even thought to tow with a Jeep Wrangler. We have a little 2-door Wrangler (AKA, the love of my life!) and it can just barely get out of it's own way. Maybe your Wrangler is a little beefier than mine.

You might also check the weight limits of your hitch mount. I was looking at a friend's jeep the other day as he was considering a small TT. The door sticker had a modest tow rating. Then I went to the back and looked at the factory tow reciever. It's tow rating was much much lower than the door sticker's rating. And since your actual rating is the lowest of the numbers he would be lucky to tow a very small and light pop-up, let alone a TT. I don't remember the exact numbers, but it was something like 3500# on the door but only 1200# on the reciever hitch. Anyway, make sure you're going with the weakest link in the chain. Hope you figgure something out.
