Holy cow! Flames 20 feet high and 30 yards away. I bet you could feel the heat big time. I'm sure glad you all are ok. I think you win the prize for craziest first trip!

You know, it could have been more like 40 yards, I dont know for sure. But it was way to dang close. And yes we could feel the heat. We plan to do many many trips, we have lots of kids and love to camp, have been tent camping, backpacking, many many mountain man rendezvous.....something tells me though that this will end up being one of the most memorable camping experiences for our kids!

It's not a need. It's a comfort, and one that we enjoy. Got any comforts that you enjoy on camping trips? The sort that you don't "need"...

X2. Having been a volunteer ranger for the USFS for many years I have seen my share of campers and backpackers who would bend the rules and start fires in restricted areas or areas where fires were not allowed.
I've also had my share of smoke filled nights caused by campers who think they must have a fire at the expense of everyone around them. With the dry conditions that we have in the west including Utah I would think there would be a complete band on any open fires and I hope that does come to pass. Here in Colorado we are "on fire" and still people can't understand the ban on fireworks. Makes one scratch their head!

It's good for putting out fires. The good stuff accelerates the fire.
