Is it allowed or does NS have a law against this . We don't really care for campgrounds we like to stop for the night when we are tired and leave early in the am for more adventure . We were in Truro a few years ago and there was signs everywhere no overnight parking everywhere so we are not going back there but consider visiting other parts of NS . Thanks .

I have done lots of boondocking in NS. & I mean in the boondocks, like rural, not on any black top, which should be called urban parking.

Of course, you are allowed to stop and park when you are tire. Always have been, always will be. It's the only way to have safe driving.

But yes, there was a time when the private Camp Ground Owners tried one on and failed. Long gone that one.

& there are lots of rural spaces in NS.

Me, if I'm short on time, I will pick out a provincial cg or rarely federal cg near where I want to be. All will have some sites that are nice and outdoorsy, vs. parking-lot-ish open field yuk.

& I, I took the road less travelled by.

Truro overnight Parking is still the same, a Town by-law forbids it. However there are only a few places (if any elswhere in the Prov.) that overnighting is not allowed, I don't know of any except the Prov. Day time Picnic parks which are always beautiful places for boon docking. I'd say the reason for this is pretty obvious.
In any case, while the supposed law was posted in parking lots, I toured the Centeral and Southern parts and parked overnight under the signs forbidding it, no one bothered me for the whole trip week.
Oh! yes I forgot, at a lot in Halifax the manager of a Tim Horton's was raising a fuss outside the RV, but the security told him it was OK and to leave us alone as we wern't causing an problem and would be gone in the morning. I slept through the whole thing, wife heard it all
Come and enjoy your self. If you need dump stations, I know where the free ones are also.
Cheers

OK no problem, kind of late now so I'll post the exact locations for you tomorrow. They're located at Greenwood, Bridgewater, Truro, New Glasgow, Canso and Sydney. Some have rinse water and some dont. When do you leave?

We had no problem boondocking our way through and around Nova Scotia last year for three months. In fact, we have a lot of GPS co-ordinates of the places we overnighted for free in Nova Scotia. Check back in the archives of our blog from April through July 2011. www.travelwithkevinandruth.com

We boondocked in Truro just last week at the Walmart there. there is a "no overnight camping" sign posted, but no one seemed to mind us there.

LOL! Yep there's a very good reason you wern't bothered. Money!
1 The regulation is a Town By-Law and as such it is enforced by a town agency that works 9 to 5 and acts only on complaints. They have no power of arrest and can issue only warnings, like unsightly property notices anything to do with By-Laws. If you refuse to leave the lot they then can call the Police which will act by asking you to leave the property, if you refuse to obey the Police then that is a crime Wal Mart can also ask you to leave and if you refused they can call the Police.

In the Truro case and many others, the police handle only criminal complaints , Justice; motor vehicle infractions (parking on the streets etc.) to name a couple that come under Police enforcement.

In any case if a property is posted, you can stay but if asked to leave it would be best if you leave (politely) without a fuss. Police do not patrol private parking lots, however if a municipality is willing to pay $$$ for the extra policing costs the police can do it.

The interesting part is that we called the Walmart a couple of weeks before we actually arrived asking if we could stay overnight in their lot. The answer was, "Yes." So we were surprised to see the lot posted as a "no overnight."

This is only the second Walmart overnight we have done--the first one was at the Houlton, Maine Walmart on our way into the Maritimes.
