I live on ten treed acres, with a few 4x4 challenges. The fact is, it is quieter where I live, than any place I camp, other than remote areas.

Wayne: this sounds like our situation, however, we don't have quite as many acres as you (10 acres of land alone in our 'hood would cost a small fortune: we're in the highly populated East, with little wilderness left to build on ). We seem to camp more on our property nestled into a quiet forest than at any campground (the camper has turned into my office over summer!), it is so quiet, no woodsmoke from campfires, no noise, no common music wafting through the ether till 11 PM at night, etc...

It would be interesting to see the outcome if everyone on this forum took the time to organize at least one of their camping trips around a land use public hearing over the next year or two.

You weren't the first to bring up getting involved, but this is the first I've seen suggested regarding organizing a TC get together, tied around SOME regional or local land-use meeting. THAT is a good idea! Not that I am volunteering but I'd be fairly interested if some of those popped up. I have been involved in local town meetings regarding land-use before, but it was not relating to public lands. It was quite eductaional to just go to the city council meetings and listen to what is going on and see public policy at work. It was an eye-opener and gives you appreciation for how hard a job it is to try to make everyone happy (impossible) or at least a reasonable compromise.

It is difficult to discuss this topic without venturing beyond the forum rule against political threads.

Whaz,

AMSA has become a politcal force . With several thousand dues paying members. Some of our elected officials are paying attention to us, much more now that the voting hereabouts has become very close. We,of course, court both sides, fishing is universal. I bet if you send some of your reports to the local Congressman, and invite him/her for a looksee at where you go and how you get there, along with how many poeple read and are interested in your travels. That might get the ball rolling. You are a BIG voice in the TC world, I'm not massaging your ego, just stating a fact.

What you guys do is informative and educational, not destructive. It has universal appeal. Dave, I have shown some of your stuff to people here on the East Coast who had no idea that the places you travel to are accessable to an RV. Some of your pictures of wall drawings and ancient dwellings are breath taking to us, here!

Of course I havn't told them that your three forths nuts, driving a heeled over truck camper aound the sides of mountains, the Joey Chitwood, of the Outback, listening to Doo-Wop music as you roar around the desert in your engineers boots.

Love to all,

skip

palmwhit - nice post and very apropos. As you read each quote examples from today or the past immediately come to mind (like Nazi Germany for the first one.) neat to see all those together in one post.

skipbee - also good post. It would be interesting for Senor Whaz or SSS to send one of the finely done TR's to a congressman from your districts to see what response you'd get. You might hear nothing back except "thanks" from one of the staffers....but for all you know you'd have one of them say "I'd like to join you for a couple of days and understand your perspective better." They'd be whaz-ooing and whaz-ahhing......and maybe it would make a difference. That would be cool.
