I thought I'd post this question because in five years I've never found any sign of water in my diesel when I drain the filter, and I inspect it closely. It's supposed to be drained about once a month but I must admit that since I've never seen water I sometimes go a little longer (my bad). Am I one of the few or are there others out there who have never seen water in their fuel? I wonder how common water contamination is? I know, this is not an excuse for being slack on filter drainage. Stuff does happen!

Not so far, I've been checking it a couple of times a week. But I only have 10K on this truck.

Water in diesel fuel can come from leaky underground fuel storage tanks, or as part of the process in making diesel fuel, after the distillation process the fuel is "water washed", then pumped into storage tanks. When the diesel is pumped out to the waiting fuel delivert trucks, it is common for the diesel storage tnks to have as much as 6" of water in the bottoms of the tank.
If the tanks are accidently pumped dry, that water can be in the fuel supply delivered to your gas station. And then into your truck. Even small quantities of water an cause rust, corrosion, extensive damage to the extremely high pressure fuel systems, etc. BAD! VERY BAD!
So the water seperator does it's job, and this is why the filter needs to be changed at recommended frequencies. Or even more often in some areas
And by the way...a fuel injector pump runs around $800.00, and fuel injectors run around 1500.00 for a set of 8. And labor costs are crazy!

I've been driving diesel truck since 1989 and have never found water in the fuel.
BTW, High pressure pump (no more injector pumps) is about $1k and a set of 8 injectors run about $5k+.

In 130,000 miles I have yet to find any water in the bottom of the filter housing. Now about two years ago I changed the fuel pump over to a Air Dog system and completely removed the old stock system which eliminated my WIF light. So now I have been opening the drain valve on the water separation filter just to be safe.
Still have not found any water in the drained fuel though.

I have had the water in fuel come on but never could find any water in the fuel when draining or taking fuel out of the tank.

130,000 miles in my 07 6.7 Cummins Dodge. Never have found a single drop of water.
2007 Dodge 2500 QC 4x4, 6.7 cummins, auto, 3.73 gears, Pullrite rail mount hitch.

I never drain mine on my 98 or 11. Never found a drop of water when changing filters. That is what the water in fues light is for.
Oh yea the light really does work.
The snow was melting fast and went into the undreground tank i was filling out of. Put about 30 gallons of water and 3 gallons of diesel in and truck was running while fueling and the truck stopped running just before the hose clicked off. Thankfully it was in my 98 Cummins 12 valve so no damage. The station payed me about $1,000 to remove the bed clean out the tank and bleed the lines new filter and full tand of fuel. I had the water in fuel come on twice after that when going around a corner fairly fast and after that never a drop again. Only about a teaspoon each time.

Keep your tanks full and there is less surface area for condensation and Pray that the fuel stop has good filters/separators.
