Here in PA SP's, there are Pet Areas for campers with pets and signs prohibiting pets elsewhere. But they also have 'pet dumps' at the restrooms at the other areas, too
Personally, we have found campers with pets to be some of the friendliest and most considerate people. As long as you can tolerate the occasional bark as the owner leaves the camper in the eve for a show or such, no big deal.
Loose and friendly pets walking with their owners can expect to be asked permission to spoil their dog
Loose and mean? Well, I also carry within compliance of the law and will never permit anyone to be harmed by a foe, furry or otherwise
I am willing to give my life if necessary to protect another, but only if I have no other choice. That is why I carry- so my family and those around me can live like the world is one big, happy, safe place with no dangers.
I would be very sad if I ever had to shoot someone's dog, but wouldn't hesitate if the situation required it. The 'invisible fence' that allows you to feel safe? Yep, I and many others keep an eye on it so you don't have to...

Sometimes I think this is posted to just RANT and it gets everyone in an uproar. That helps nothing. I have NEVER saw unleashed dogs in a state park or private campground. I have NEVER saw an owner not picking up after his/her dog. I am sure it happens but not as much as everyone thinks or rants about! Couldn't we just create a sticky for dog ranters
Then you don't go camping very often, or camp where there are a different kind of people. Here in TN is a fairly common sight.
We camp at least a week in every month. I guess I just don't go looking for something to complain about! But, I really never have seen dogs or their owners bisbehaving PS I'm not really sure what you mean by "different kind of people".

I also find nearly impossible IF you camp often AND in different places, that you have not seen an offender.
RE: the sticky and the dislike for rants?
Real simple, DO NOT read the threads. No one has a gun to your head to read every threads! It truly is just that simple!
We camp in a private campground and also state parks. We have not boondocked yet or used any of the National Parks. I just don't think THIS topic gets anything solved with dog owners that are not responsible. I also don't believe it happens as much as a few people would like you to believe. Check my post, when I referenced a "dog rant sticky" it was followed by a smilie face. I WAS JUST JOKING! Geesh, chill out!

What on earth makes you think that we lie and make these up?
It's not rocket science, the more days you are on the road camping the more things you will experience
I just don't think THIS topic gets anything solved with dog owners that are not responsible..
Oh yes it DOES!
2,822 people have read this post.~MANY~ of them new to RV'ing.
If just ONE camper who owns dogs reads this and sees and understands that:
1. it is not not an acceptable CG practice
2. disturbs other campers
3. and can result in a dangerous situation.
Then this forum and these type of threads HAS served it's purpose well.
AND that just might be the ONE ~"NOW INFORMED"~ camper that will be parked next to me!

IMHO, again IMHO I don't believe that pet owners that are not responsible are reading these posts or even are on this board. Maybe a few? I don't believe anyone lies but I DO beleive that the truth gets streched, exaggerated and repeated OVER AND OVER (worse each time). Wish I knew how to make red fonts like you) I think what many newbies take away from these types of threads is that there are a lot of people who do nothing but complain. IMHO, again IMHO, complaining never fixes the problem. If you truly see this happening then DO SOMETHING about it. Maybe talk to the owner or the camp host/ranger. JMHO

I do agree that many posts are full of nothing but complaining, but this one I truly believe has merit as maybe it doesn't happen OFTEN, but it is one of those things that when it DOES happen, it seems much larger of a problem because of the potential for danger. Just that one time I posted about was pretty scary, as I had no clue what to expect out of that very muscular dog staring at me as I was about to bolt out out of the TT that morning. This scenario didn't need to happen to me 15 times during my CG excursions to hit my radar as a problem, as it should not happen even once.
If only ONE newbie reads this and realizes that keeping his dog on a leash at all times is the right thing to do, then this thread is not for naught.
The good news is, most dog owners I see and meet at CG's are delightful and friendly, and their dogs help strike up conversation and a great way to meet new people. Sadly, it only takes one time though to be a real issue for someone. Not everyone is a dog lover. Just because I am doesn't mean I expect every other person around to tolerate everyone's pooch. Even though I have not encountered a lot of issues, I have encountered a lot of dog walkers whose dog poops on my site. So far, no one has declined to clean it up,and looks embarrassed, so I don't get mad and just smile and tell them "no worries, I used to have dogs too". BUT not everyone is so forgiving as like i said, not everyone is a dog lover.

Think she is talking about people who are out there cooking meth or tending their maryjane fields. And am sure that is what the OP ran across in a national forest. Regular campers do not do the things that the people the OP ran across did. And considering that you live in Virginia, I can take you places where those "different kind of people" live in certain parts of your state, but would not feel I could take you there safely. One has to be very careful what back roads one goes driving around on in certain parts of Virginia!

Thanks for clearing that up...just wasn't sure what the poster meant. I agree that there are many unsavory types in every state and all of us need to be cautious of where we wonder off too.
