Did some Toy Hauler maintenance when i got home from deployment...Onan MQ 4000 spec K not running.. It was surging when I did a run up 6 months early while on leave, so I knew I'd have issues when i got home.

Pulled carb, clean best i can with carb solvent, and it'll now start, but only by opening up the throttle FULL.. And then of course it over speeds and shuts down.

Just going to bite the bullet and get a new carb.... I could waste hours soaking and trying it again and again, but Im done wasting time.

Best price I've found is $161
Onan Generator Micro Quiet Carburetor KY Model 146-0785

Anyone have a better source?

Thanks

Umm dont know about the mq but the emerald has a simple to clean carb. There are two brass jets that HAVE to be removed to clean. Two needles that HAVE to be removed to clean and the float valve seat (dont often need to remove that one. Have you completely dissembled it? Use carb cleaner and compressed air and a tip cleaner ( get them from a welding supply made for cleaning torch tips but perfect for carb jet orifices )

Thanks for the reply,, but much different carb on that GENSET the the MQ 4000..

This one can be cleaned, and I've done some many times..

When it's just the fuel shut off valve, and the main jet.. it works out ok.. But when this one have the other passages plugged solid... while I could eventually soak it, blow compressed air, flush and run cleaner, soak in a sonic tank for hours..and likely make it work.. My time is worth more to me then $160 to buy a new carb, remove the old in 15 min, install the new in 15 min and be up and running again.

I just had to replace the carb on our 4KW MQ Spec K. That $161 was the best price I could find. An expert here told me the low side jet has three 90-degree bends inside the casting which makes it all but impossible to clean.
That said, some have succeeded by soaking the whole carb assembly (MINUS PLASTIC and RUBBER parts) in lacquer thinner or acetone for days.
"Low Speed" is a little hard to comprehend on a machine that runs at a steady RPM, but it takes both jets to "accept" the load.

That has been my experience as well with this carb.. I have caught the issue early before, and spent hours over several days getting it right... Im just not interested this time in spending the time.

New carb ordered tonight, be here on WED, ready to go to WED Night track session in comfort.

Tomorrow, we will have to sweat it out in the truck,,,,,

Yep. If it runs at all, you can try the Seafoam treatment.... half a can of Seafoam in a gallon or two of gas... immerse the fuel pump suction in it. Start it, run it for 1/2 hour. Shut off. Let sit overnight. Run a few minutes the next day to freshen the solvents. Repeat daily for a week or 10 days if you notice any improvement in a few days. I've cured two Microlite 2800's that way when they were varnished up by PO's neglect, including one that would barely start.

You guys must have more time to devote to cleaning a cheap carb then I do...Thats not a bad thing,,and if it works out for you Im all for it.
But for me, $161 and 30 minutes of my time is a much better solution then 2 or 3 cans of $9 sea foam and hours of my time over several days possible getting it to run again.

To each his own...

I recently tried Seafoam on my carb-clogged Honda. After repeatedly trying, I failed miserably. Had to get the thing fixed.

Now, I'm draining the tank and the carb after each use (only used for storm outages). I'm thinking today's gasoline is just too problematic.

In my world, carburetors do NOT wear out. I have more time than money, and I receive satisfaction whenever I fix something. Therefore, I fix carbs. Right now, I'm learning ZAMA pumper carburetors (in between working on my NORCOLD 1200 LRIM refrigerator).
