Sorry if this has been asked and answered before.
Should you keep your black water valve closed until it is almost full or leave it open while on site?
Thanks in advance.

Keep the valve closed until tank is at least 2/3 full. Empty the black tank first, flush the tank 2 or 3 times until the water runs clear. Empty the grey tank.

You should keep it closed until you need to dump. If the tank is below 2/3 full, add water before dumping. Be sure to add back a couple/three gals. after dumping so the tank doesn't dry out.

If you leave it open, the solids will go to the bottom of the tank and the water will flow out of the tank, not the solids. You'll get really nasy clogs in the system.

On the other hand, letting the tank fill up some using plenty of flush water when you flush the toilet...then pulling the handle will flush out the tank and get rid of the (as they say in Star Trek) the nasty Klingons!

As others have said, do not leave it open, drain as needed, flush it well (until runs clear, using the geo method helps with this), then close it and leave a few gallons in the bottom to prevent the dreaded stone mountain from building up. We also only dump our grey tank when it is full. We dump the grey tank after the black tank to help get any yucky reminants out of the sewer hose.

Always closed. Only open it before dumping the grey water tank.

If there is ONE thing I truly dislike about our Surveyor it's the fact that it has separate valves/outlets for the holding tanks. I generally use a "Y" connector at the sewer inlet at full hookup sites(can't rinse black hose)until until I remove from trailer and I use an Anti-backflow valve on an old Black washing machine hose.
If I pull to a dump station I use single hose and have to move from one valve to the other. And I always hose down the area to dilute any drips I can't avoid.
