So im at MIS this past w/e enjoying 5 days of tailgating during the NASCAR race.
Wife went to wash dishes after breakfast this past Saturday and was complaining that she wasn't getting hot water. I told her that its a 6 gallon tank and to give it about 10-20 minutes to heat up. I'm not really sure how long it normally takes since this is the first time I used it "on demand" Normally its always going.
After about 20 minutes and no hot water, I went around back to see what was going on and I noticed flames inside the control panel through the vent. I went to open it and after burning my hands I noticed flames coming from the vent on the venturi tube as well as the area where the ignitor is. Needless to say I have a lot of melted wires and other things back there now.
I was hooked up to a Honda EZ3500 generator. But wasn't running since I figured the battery would be enough to get the ignitor going and I had the water heater set to gas.
This trailer has been nothing but a pain in the @#$ since the day I bought it new. And when I see other with the same trailer I ask them if they have had any problems with theirs. When I told this fellow race fan about my issue he said it was my fault because i had it hooked up to a generator while running gas and to read my manual.
Well all my paper work is in the TT and that is now at the dealership where I bought it. We got home from MIS and quickly unloaded it and I took it in.
I'm wondering if there is any truth to what this guy told me?
My service writer said that one of the wires is supposed to melt when exposed to flame and upon doing so, is suppose to shut the entire system down so it stops trying to reignite. Mine kept trying to reignite, so something failed in the system.

I fail to see how this would be any different than if you were hooked up to 30 AMP shore power on a pedestal. What model water heater?

There was a recall on some water heaters for fire danger. You might check it out.
They installed a guard around the flame area.

Most of the time the heat tube is blocked by mud dobbers or something.

Ditto. Was this "fellow race fan" holding a can in a huggie?

Hi,
I'm sorry your purchase does not please you.
Running the generator has nothing to do with the gas operation of the water heater.

Sound like flash back caused by a partially or completely blocked burner tubeā¦
The thermal cut off is supposed to shut down the gas in extreme heat situations but there has been some known problems with that not happeningā¦

If that isn't covered by warranty then maybe it is covered by your insurance.

Had you ever run it on LP? On an Atwood, there is a thermal fuse for that reason, which obviously didn't work.
You might file a report at http://www.saferproducts.gov

I wonder if the guy who was writing about a recall was talking about the recall on frig's last year? I do not know of any recalls on water heaters that needed a guard installed.
