RE: Verizon Field test data

I have been in the same situation. I use my GPS and mark the tower locations a s a waypoint. When I get back to the RZV, I put the GPS in hiking mode or whatever it is and then set it to go to the marked waypoint. I get a directional arrow showing me where the tower is.

RE: Fried it all!

Generators themselves can be the culprit-- not just the operator. The voltage regulator failed on my Generac propane genset and it was putting out 149 volts. The Progressive Industries EMS saved me.
A new voltage regulator solved the problem.

RE: sanitizing the fresh water tank and lines

The shame of it all is,....if you keep it "full" whenever possible, you don't have to sanitize it,.....ever !
Not so! Ask me how I know! If you are cautious and fill with water from a city supply which has been treated, you may only have to sanitize a couple of times a year to be safe. The key is how fast you use your water. If it sits in your tank for any length of time unused, the chlorine will degrade rather quickly and lose its' effectiveness. This is even more critical during the hot summer months.
If I was filling with rural well water, I would sanitize much more often.Hmm...I sanitize every couple years and have never had any trouble.
Hi Deen,
I was replying to the person who said by keeping the tanks full you don't have to sanitize it - EVER! If sanitizing infrequently works for you, by all means continue doing that.
I sanitize at least 2X per year to be safe.
I also change the batteries in my smoke detectors and CO detectors 2X per year when the time changes.... even though the batteries are never dead. Same principle

RE: Rough way to calculate gallons per day of water?

I would think 4 days would be a good goal to shoot for and should be doable.
Some good suggestions above.
Washing dishes and pots and pans takes up a large volume of water. More than you would ever think. If you do wash dishes and pans, make sure the water is very hot. They come clean quicker.
Navy showers are a must. Catch the shower water when you are getting the temp set in a bucket. Use it for rinsing dishes or flushing the toilet.
Start with 3-5 gallons of water in your black tank when you leave home. Scrimp and save on water everywhere BUT the black water tank. Make sure you use plenty of water when flushing to adequately liquefy the waste.

RE: Cleaning Black Water Tank

Leslyons,
I deal with some of your limitations regularly - remote locations, few resources and stationary.
You have gotten some good suggestions in the posts above and pay special attention to the ones in which the products are actually used - not the speculative ones.
Everyone always says check the vents which is good but in most cases, your tank is just stinking. The reasons could be myriad. Make sure you are dumping the tank at only 2/3 full to full. Add water softener and Dawn to keep the tank walls slick. Google GEO method. Rinse after dumping IF you have adequate water supply and disposal facilities.
To get the tank clean NOW and start off on a new page, I would recommend this from experience.
Get one of the digesters mentioned above. Add a pint of Dawn detergent and a pint of Calgon water softener. Fill with clean water. Let it sit for a week (or as long as possible).
Dump the tank. Rinse it if you can.
Add a pint of Dawn, 2 cups of Calgon and a pint of bleach. You can expect some replies to my post which will say the bleach is bad juju. People are certainly entitled to their opinions. I have researched and speak from experience. Read more about using bleach here.
The odor should be gone. Future use of the tank should include regular use of the water softener and Dawn. Use the bleach in moderation and only when absolutely necessary. Dump when only 2/3 full or more. Forget about the blue stuff and other tank deodorizers. Those products just make my RV smell like a Porta John.
Remember your black tank is a holding tank -- not a septic system. It is designed to liquefy the waste so it will run out of the tank -- nothing more. Use PLENTY of water regularly to help this process.

Wayne,
Do you need the BBQ hose or the one to connect an external tank? I have 2 Deluxe units plumbed into my onboard tank. I never use the BBQ hoses.

RE: Diesel or Propane generator

I have a well used propane generator on my older RV. All the arguments above are valid. However, you play the cards you are dealt. I have drycamped for up to 6 weeks during a Texas summer without major inconvenience using an Extend A Stay and external tanks.
With all that said, this consideration has not been voiced. A propane genset will de-value your MH hugely when it comes time to trade or sell it. Take the same MH with a diesel genset and the value will be greatly enhanced.
As a matter of fact, I use 2 Extend A Stays.

RE: lp gas transfer

Is there a way to transfer LP gas from a container to the motorhome tank? Is it safe? I will be using the motorhome for deer hunting and will be out in the field for several days and there won't be enough lp in my tank to last. I would hate to have to pick up stakes and go all the way into town.
Extend A Stay is the way to go. I keep the tank on the MH near full for emergencies and use the Extend A Stay on a series of 40lb tanks I got off of Craigslist for little or nothing. A 40lb'r is about as heavy as I want to be horsing around. It is SO much easier to take 2 of those tanks into town to re-fill instead of driving the MH.
As a matter of fact, I have 2 Extend A Stays. One feeds the onboard appliances and the other one feeds my Generac LP generator.

RE: I'm A Believer!

A quick question, well maybe not:) On a 50 amp coach with a 50 amp hardwired, EMS or surgeguard, Does it still protect you if your plugged into a 30 amp power source with a dogbone adaptor?
Yes, it will also work if you are plugged into a 15 amp wall plug.

RE: Whats the Real deal on propane generators?

Propane generators for RVs used to be alot more popular than they are now. I guess they fell out of favor due to the hassle of refilling them and the fear people have of propane as another onboard combustible element.
With that said, I have a Generac 6600 propane generator with more than 1000 hours on it. Connected to a 40 gal onboard tank and the use of an Extend a Stay and multiple 40 lb bottles give me lots of options. I picked up several 40 lb bottles off of Craigs List over time for just a few bucks a piece.
A propane generator burns cleaner and causes less wear and tear on the generator system. The fuel never goes bad and never needs to be treated with any sort of conditioner or stabilizer. I average .7 gal/hr consumption.

RE: Battery Monitoring

I was looking for recommendations for a battery monitor/panel or volt meter for my Lance 915. I have four total batteries and currently just use the monitor that came with the Lance.
I have a Xantrex in my toy hauler that is pretty nice.
As always, many advance Thanks for your help!

RE: Anyone using a Wilson 801245 Cellular Amp/Repeater ?

If the Wilson Panel antenna you refer to is Part 301135, I would go with that. It is a directional antenna and if you face it AWAY from your external antenna you can get by with less separation. I am using almost the same setup though a little more extreme. I did some exhaustive research before I upgraded to the 801245 amp from a less powerful Wilson product.

RE: Propane vs electric heat

I use a combination of three sources. A thermostatically controlled 1500w electric heater, A Mr. Heater Little Buddy and the on board furnace. The inefficient, on board furnace is used only under the coldest conditions.
I have overwintered in my RV the last 3 winters and found an Extend A Stay to be a valuable accessory -- I use two of them. I picked up 3 40# portable propane tanks off of Craigslist for little to nothing and just rotate them out. I save the on board 40 gallon propane tank for emergencies or when I cannot get to town.

RE: Improving reception for Verizon's mobile broadband

I use an AT&T aircard in some very remote locations across TX and OK. My implementation to pick up towers sometimes 30 miles distant may be more extreme then most here want or need. I just upgraded the entire system with Wilson components.
