RE: Information Discussion for Gate Guards

we did it now working a gate started tue afternoon. just in time for our first thunderstorm. what fun hahaha. then the water tank hose came off and pumped it dry. didn't know it till the next day because of all the mud from the storm. should have more water today. we had some in the fresh water tank but thats gone now too. we filled up 13 pages in thr first 24 hours. seems they have a new rig just setting up and a pipe line crew and a facilities crew here adding more tanks and pipe line.
You may want to check and see if you are supposed to be writing everyone down or if you are just assigned to write down the traffic for the rig. It sure would help out. We are assigned with a rig and are just responsible for the rig traffic, all other traffic we just wave in and out.

Why so much drama?? You got searched...you had the option of submitting to it or not. We are only replying to your post with our input. That is what a forum is for. Chill out and enjoy your time off.

RE: Information Discussion for Gate Guards

We feel the same way about searching our RV.. We have nothing illegal, but I do not want a stranger going through my personal things. We were told by the company saftey man a few months ago that they might be conducting searches at the rig. We told him how we felt about the searches and he told us their company rarely searches the gate guard's RV unless there is a cause to do so.

RE: Information Discussion for Gate Guards

It is a dirty ,hot job but it did pay well, We are not going to do it again in Texas
Exceed the field superintendents expectations and keep the land owner happy and you'll get better gates and stay working. You'll also make more which makes the dust, mud and dry skin tolerable.
We got an unexpected bonus yesterday!! A great perk...Like MD said, It sure helps to keep everybody happy!!

Don/Shar, it looks like GGS has been eliminating a few problem employees lately and everything is running good. They have some new gates and are putting people to work quickly.

I said there are 3 companies that I would not work for. I did not name the companies and did not say anything bad about them. They may be a perfect match for others.
Like a car salesman friend told me once, "There's a butt for every seat."
We have been with GGS for over 2 yrs fulltime and are very satisfied here and well taken care of.
Everyone needs to be where they are most comfortable and happy with their job. Some folks can not be happy no matter where they are at.
Cheers Everyone!!

RE: Information Discussion for Gate Guards

Do not be afraid to go to work for GGS. They are a very large company and have excellent equipment and good service people.
There are many other gate guard companies around and some also would be good to work for....
You just have to decide for yourself which company best fits your needs.
GGS is not a company I would choose to work for based on our personal experiences. I would strongly suggest and encourage those who are considering the work of a gate guard to do extensive research with respect to the different companies. The gate guard company's support, or lack thereof, is a major factor in one's ability to perform their duties as a gate guard.
Why badmouth GGS just because you yourself had a bad experience?

So, that being said, after the lawsuit, the tax implications would be against GGS. The gate guards would actually profit if the Minmum Wage ruling is upheld.

RE: Information Discussion for Gate Guards

So, you are no longer using your LLC for gate-guarding? Are You termed as individual employees of their company?

RE: Information Discussion for Gate Guards

Even if they term us as employees, we still would be able to use the same tax deductions, so there shouldn't be a difference. When we file with the 1099 we are responsible for the self-employment taxes, so some of that should be refunded if we have to go back and re-file our previous years.
I was a Corporate Tax Accountant in my career, but I don't know much about personal taxes, just what I research for my own tax return.
Hopefully, everything will come out OK. If not, we'll just have to deal with it. There will thousands of people's tax returns affected with all the people that have worked for GGS through the years.
That lawsuit may never be resolved in our lifetime....

RE: Information Discussion for Gate Guards

I have had an Independent Contracting business as a part-time job for several years and have always been paid by 1099. The IRS has never questioned my deductions or my tax returns. Most of the work I did was just as it is with GGS..with me actually being a sub-contractor and doing the work to their specifications.
I really don't think there is anything to worry about, but it could benefit you to consult with a tax consultant.

RE: Information Discussion for Gate Guards

Before you jump into gate guarding, you need to think about how you will obtain groceries and do laundry. You will be working 24/7 and each well takes 3-4 weeks. So you would need enough groceries and clean clothes for at least a month at a time. You could even be assigned to a gate that might last several months.
It sure would be a hectic job for a single person.

RE: Information Discussion for Gate Guards

Folks, I am post this as a gate guard safety, be aware post, I do have limited additional info and if you want more info, please PM me, as I will NOT post anything else on this forum. This is confirmed information.
All gate guards in the area of Cotulla, Fowlerton, Freer, Artesia Wells, need to be aware that there was an act of extreme violence committed against a gate guard this past Thursday in that area. Because it is an ongoing joint state & federal investigation, law enforcement is not releasing any details. Please folks, DO NOT open your door to any foot traffic, day or night and be very aware of who and what while checking vehicle traffic. Make very sure you have your cell phone on your person and if you are in a NO SIGNAL area, work with both your company and the oil company until you have an amplifier that works and you do have cell service........It is your welfare and life that matters, NOT a few measly dollars to any company. I may post additional information as I receive and confirm it.
We were offered two higher paying jobs in these areas by other GG companies, but we decided to stay where we are even though we are making less money...just don't want to go west of Hwy 37, at least not that far. Some things are just more important than money.

RE: Information Discussion for Gate Guards

They even stopped posting about the meals they were getting.I've lost 10 lbs already.
Well, if you need to hear about food, our rig(us included)were fed twice last week. One was a cajun shrimp boil(which included shrimp, sausage, mushrooms, potatoes, and corn on the cob) and banana pudding for dessert all cooked by one of the rig's vendors. The other meal was a catered meal(catfish, shrimp, tater tots, slaw, hushpuppies and beans with cobbler for dessert)furnished by the drilling company.
This new rig we are on has at least one big meal brought in each week.

RE: Information Discussion for Gate Guards

It seems like anyone who works for any gate-guard company other than GGS can still communicate anything they want and take all the pictures they want.
It doesn't bother me to sign their non-disclosure agreement. We can still talk about gate-guarding, we just can't disclose specific information and names.

RE: Information Discussion for Gate Guards

We'e been with GGS over 1 1/2 years and have had excellent service working out of the Whitsett yard. Their equipment sure looks better than any others I've seen out there.
It seems like the guard companies that are paying higher have some very busy gates, so think about it before you change over. More money might mean a lot more work.

As gate guards, we are all at gates on a private property, but we are required to have a Security license and there are state officials that come around and check this.
How do you explain that no license is needed?

Howdy, we are back in the land of Mickey D's and internet. Along the way; however, the engine in our motorcoach blew up. :E So, we are sitting in Pearsall waiting on a mechanic. It is good to be able to communicate with you all again!
Is Missy back?
Where will you be working?
Who are you working for?

I would much rather get my $125 a day and not have to worry about the equipment and getting replacements when wanted or needed.
That sounds too stressful..That's why I took early retirement six years ago, to take life a little easier.

RE: Information Discussion for Gate Guards

I need some info on the driveway sensors that some of you use:
What brand is the best?
Where do you buy them?
Do you have a lot of false alarms?
I think with our new RV, the alarms may work better for us.
Any info will be greatly appreciated...Thanks!!
