RE: 4x4 vs 4x2?

Snow, ice, sand, mud and off road conditions call for a 4 X 4 cement, asphalt and no snow, ice, sand, mud or off road conditions 4 X 2 IMHO. Mike

RE: 992 Lance Camper

I second the Filon delamination due to water leaks. I just don’t like that material for some reason. Mike

RE: Camper Theft

If they can load that sucker they can have it. Ha Ha I have electric jacks and keep the remote controller for the jacks in my truck. I also rely on the insurance policy I have that is 100% replacement for the first 3 years. Mike

RE: Is it strong enough ?

I would think that 2 inch by 1/8 would work, just a word of caution prior to purchasing your metal. Make sure your belly beam clears all the stuff under your truck, drive shaft with the rear wheels all the way down. Jacking your truck up until the rear wheels have about one inch of clearance between them and the pavement then check for clearance for the drive shaft. And then there is the gas tank and any thing else that gets in the way. Mike

Question for people running 19.5 tires.

Looking at Rickson’s web site they say they match the low spot of the rim with the high spot on the tires, they also say they have special balancing equipment. Ok if that is so, what do you do when your 19.5 tires wear out? At $350.00 shipping for the tires and wheels do you send back the rims and then have them mount new tires and do all the special stuff to the tires to balance and then pay the shipping back to you? For anyone that has replaced their 19.5 tires what did you do for the replacement? Where did you purchase the new set of tires? What steps or process did you go through to have them balanced? I need to up grade my wheels and tires to carry about 7500 for the rear of my SRW dodge truck. I am thinking of going to either Stockton wheel and having them build me some 17 inch wheels that are rated for 4500 and mounting some 17 inch tires rated for 3750 pounds each or looking at the 19.5 Rickson. Rear of truck weighs about 6700 pounds truck and camper and the stock tires "E" rated are rated for 3200 each total about 6400 pounds so I am about 300 pounds over. Any ideas would be much appreciated. Thank you for your time. Mike

RE: New truck for camper!?

I would go here http://www.edmunds.com/zipcode/new/index.html and build your truck, I would also go to Kelly Blue Book and do the same http://www.kbb.com/new-cars. I got a new Dodge diesel Quad cab out the door for $35,000. The same equipped Chevy was $44,000. So I got the dodge and took the extra $9,000 and used it to get a new camper. Good luck. Mike

RE: Sweet! Anybody have this bed?

Per their web site. Dodge 4500 Crew Cab Shown With Our All New Aluminum Camper Haul-All-Bed Looks cool but it looks like the camper tie downs would be right in front of two of the storage compartment doors? Mike

RE: TC rubber bumpers

I would take Sleepy’s suggestion. On some of the trucks the top front rail next to the cab protrudes back into the bed area and the rubber bumpers will compress somewhat and your camper will still hit the front bed rail. Ask me how I know? Yep got two nice little dints in the top rail and my rubber bumpers are about 2 ½ to 3 inches thick. Mike

RE: Crushed runners in bed of truck?

Super Dave I am referring to the bottom of the bed. The Artic Fox has a rail that runs across the front and down both sides of the bottom of the camper; the rails are about 5/16 below the actual bottom (wood portion) of the camper’s bottom. The back of the camper bottom hangs out the back of the truck bed about 10 or 11 inches so it has no bearing on the runners at the back of the truck as there is no camper rail there. I guess with the weight of the camper sitting on the ribs/ runners raised portion of the bottom of the bed, (I call them runners) only on the front, it is too much weight for the runners. I think if I removed the forward portion of the bed mat the front rail would be suspended a small amount above these runners thus removing the weight from the front rail of the camper. The camper would then sit on the side of the bottom of the bed next to the fender wells on the area where there are no runners and on the rubber bed mat on the rest of the bottom of the camper. The other thing I could do is cut 2 pieces of rubber maybe 5/16 thick and place them on the areas next to the finder wells where there are no runners, place my bed mat on top of them that would raise up the area that the 2 rails sit on thus helping to distribute the weight more evenly. That would take weight off of the front rail where it is denting the runners at the front of the bottom of the bed. If you think about it, it would be like taking a ½ inch piece of water pipe placing it on the front of the bed from side to side and then placing your camper on top of the pipe thus placing most of the weight in this small area. Mr. Whazoo

Mr. Whazoo, Did I see your truck/camper heading in the direction of Heber Overgaard Arizona on highway 260 on Monday December 7 in the middle of our first snow storm? That looked just like your rig with the gas cans on the back rocketing up the frozen highway throwing caution to the snow flakes. If it was hope you had fun. Mike

Crushed runners in bed of truck?

Was wondering if anyone has had the raised portion of their bed (runners on the bottom of the bed that go from the tail gate to the front of the bed) dented or crushed where the front rail of the camper sets in the front of the bed. I have a rubber mat that is about 5/8 thick in the bed that the camper sits on and I am noticing that the runners at the front of the bed are dented where the front camper rail sits. Camper is an Arctic Fox 811 that hangs out about 12 inches in the rear of my long bed Dodge. The side rails of the camper sit in the non raised areas next to the finder wells. Thanks for your time. Mike

RE: Traveling with camper attached at 3 points.. instead of 4.

MrPhelps You need to send Russell Welding a Christmas present that is one heck of a deal in short notice. If it was a shop in Arizona it would be $125.00 when ever they could get to it.

RE: Headache (sick) Every Morning

The obvious for me was to make sure the bed is level or a little elevated at the pillow end. Mike

RE: Lance Warranty/Customer Service is PO me off // Update

Lance pays their people $10.00 per hour Camping world and other dealers charge $119.00 per hour, the math is easy to do.

RE: Lance 861 vs Arctic Fox 811

I have a new 2010 Arctic Fox 811 and due to quality and the two months I have been trying to get the 21 items fixed with my new camper and the lack of returned calls from the Manufacture I would definitely go with anything EXCEPT Arctic Fox. As a matter of fact I wouldn’t purchase anything from Northwood Manufacturing period. We have a tarp over the air-conditioner to keep the rain water out as the air-conditioner was loose on the roof from the factory and the water runs in and soaks the dinette seat cushion. The sewer hose tray in the bumper hits the camper jack after extended about one foot and you have pull and bend the tray around to get the hose out, it will not slide out past the camper jacks on both sides that’s about one foot to get your hose out. You can see the ground out side from the inside of the camper looking at the bottom of the closed door. Also you might make a note, in 2010 their warrantee went from 18 months to 12 months wonder why?
