RE: 10 years on the Truck Camper Forum

IF we achieve RIP status, does that mean we automatically gain 10 yr status, even if we joined in 2004?
And, I'm betting we have a few with more than one screen name that have ten years worth of input too ... and looks like on that coming up on that date too, in June, close enough?
And curious, why would a poster get kicked off for deleting old posts? That seems a little odd ...
Yes, RIP status equal 10 year status.
Deleting the text out of one old post was not a problem. Going back and deleting the complete text of 100's of posts when you have been warned not to do that was a problem.

RE: 10 years on the Truck Camper Forum

After 10+ yrs on this site myself, two site server crash resets, and being "deleted" another 2x by a moderator for "deleting" old posts, I get to live on quietly as a newbie member :W
Oh yeh, NY. Yes, the forum owner does not like folks to go back and delete the text out of all their old posts, even if they are being stalked by Russian spies. I remember you, but my brain forgets your old user name. About when did you join?

RE: why two tow hooks?

If you are getting towed out of the mud, you really would never use both hooks
I've helped pull stuck vehicles before where we wouldn't even think about trying to use a single vehicle. We used two vehicles, each with a winch with a block to a single tow hook. Each of those vehicles were anchored to other vehicles to keep them from sliding. That works out to about 34,000 pounds of force which would have easily ripped out a single hook. And we still were thinking of pulling a third winch line to the stuck vehicle but a little bit of patience did the trick.
That's what I was thinkin'. If 2k lbs of pull will get you unstuck, you was never really stuck at all. :) :) :)
I've seen two cables pullin' on a stuck rig with the pulling rigs bumpers up against big trees to keep them from dragging and the dang cables so tight you start to wonder just how close you want to be to this catastrophe in the making. :) :) :)

RE: why two tow hooks?

Asking because I removed my tow hooks and replaced them with hard mounted 2" receiver tubes. A tow hook (or two) is one thing they can hold, but why would I ever need two?

You can't have too many tow points. I have 2 D-rings & 2 hooks on front and 2 D-rings on back. Have used all of them at one time or another.

RE: Do I really need a Dually?

If you have to ask, the answer is YES!
Ditto. In most cases, that is correct.
Most people ask when they realize they are in that gray area where its possible to haul their camper on an SRW, but may not make good sense to do so.

RE: Do I really need a Dually?

That 500 lb tongue weight on a 24" extended hitch will put another 1,000 lbs on your rear axle.
I basically had the rig you are considering. A 4,000 lb camper on an F-350 SRW pulling a 7,000 lb car hauler. It would get us there, but it was exhausting and no fun to drive. Traded for an F-350 DRW. Now its two-finger relaxed driving at interstate speeds.
I have Timbrens on our DRW. They work fine but I would suggest looking into Stable Loads.
Good Luck,
Brad

RE: Dealer Listings - Find a TC Dealer in Your Area

It was getting close. As you know, generally speaking, if a thread isn't posted to in 1 year, the forum software automatically locks the thread.

RE: Chalet under new ownership

All TC manufacturers have occassional problems with the campers they build. Its good to hear that Chalet is working with you to solve the problem with your camper.
Good luck,

RE: Cell Tower Antenna - How Directional?

That's problem number 2. Problem number one is finding a coffee can big enough to get my head and cell phone in at the same time. :)

Could you post a link to that? I looked, but couldn't find it.

RE: We lost another memeber..

John's last post from last summer:
John,
Did you find some high ground when the hurricane went thru?
Brad
I just lassoed it and turned on my THROTTLE CABLE brad.
I just don't listen real well Ya know
Another "Best of" jponder from 2004:
solar fry is right. let your rig roll with the hills slowing going up hills and freewheeling going down this will maximize mileage. you can do this with your foot held in one spot or you can do like I do and intall a throttle cable. at 50 MPH on level ground hitting 60 going down hills and slowing to 40 climbing hills I can bust 19 MPG in a 11K truck that is lifted. you just got to sit back and relax and enjoy the scenery
What a shame; he was so young. I always enjoyed jponder's posts. He seemed to see the world a little differently than most people. We need more folks like him.

RE: Automotive GPS suggestion

no love lost on the TomTom.
Bought mine on my brother-in-laws recomendation. Now I know why he is a welder/pipefitter and nother an electronics expert. I would not take another TomTom if they were giving them away. Maps are lousy, you can't trust anything it tells you, customer service is worse than lousy; TomToms are a European product adapted for North America. I have a free app on my iPhone that does a much better job than our TomTom.

RE: Cell Tower Antenna - How Directional?

We were up there again yesterday. Internet would work, but very slowly. Cell phone would not work at all. The signal strength mostly remained on the 88db, but occasionaly jumped to 102db. Weird.
Found an old post on another forum from a guy who had similar problems. He lived on a huge lake with lots of open space between him and the towers (kinda like me on top of my mtn). He said that his iPhone would bounce back and forth between a strong tower and a weak tower. I guess I'm going to buy a yagi and give it a try up there. I hope it will allow me to lock into the stronger tower and block out the weak tower.

RE: Where to buy a decent snatch block?

I agree that you should get rid of the 3k HF winch. Hardly adequate for anything.
They are good for very light duty, but not much more, even with a snatch block. One other thing to remember, the pull rating of most winches is measured with only two wraps on the spool. The pulling force drops of dramatically for a nearly full spool.
Steel vs synthetic winch rope - both have there safety issues. Seen and read about too many synthetic winch ropes breaking for no apparent reason and giving absolutely no warning. Don't want that issue in my mind while I'm hanging on a winch cable on the side of a mtn. Guess I'm a dinosaur, but I will keep my steel winch rope and manual tranny thank you. :) :)

RE: Where to buy a decent snatch block?

I remember seeing a photo once of a jeep with the winch hook and cable going thru the windhsield and the driver's seat headrest. That might have been the same incident. :E :E :E
Winches kinda scare me a little, but I luv them anyway. :)
