RE: Its Official! The Wife and I Are Now Truck Campers!

Congrats! Good choice on the Northstar but then I may be biased. Our Northstar has the pressure regulator built in. You don't need to put one on the city water hookup.

RE: Looking for sensitive thermostat

I'll keep my cheap spring loaded thermostat. I've grow attached to the
"boioioing" sound it makes when it kicks on. It's kind of comforting in a strange sort of way.

RE: This one or that one or the other one...

Hey neighbor. There could be a reason that the Palomino is cheaper than the Lance. Maybe Palomino uses inferior construction methods and materials. Or perhaps it's because Lance is so popular they feel they can charge thousands extra just for the name recognition. Both are probably fine. But depending on how long you intend to keep the camper, resale value may be higher on a Lance. Have you already ruled out all the other brands?

RE: Need assistance

We were in the same boat as you in 2010. Moved from a 26 foot Wilderness TT to a truck camper. We also have a 2500HD. After a few trips to the very limited number of dealers that actually had TCs on the lot (Lance, Palomino, and Northstar) we opted for a Northstar 8.5 Adventurer. A trip to the factory in Iowa to talk with the owners and tour the facility convinced us we made the right choice. Two years and many miles later we still feel we made the right choice. Both my wife and daughter will drive the TC. Not so with the TT. Truck handles just fine. We did put on air bags and an anti-sway bar.
Keep looking and asking questions so you can make an informed choice. It's a lot of money for a truck camper compared with a trailer so spend some time just sitting in one on the lot. Try the bed for a while, sit on the toilet, make the dinette into the bed a try it out too. And make sure you can handle the small space in case the weather forces you to stay inside for any length of time.
Good luck,
Mike

Remove the 4 screws, take off the cover, unplug the wires, replace the cover. But then mine are Happijacs.

RE: NorthStar 8.5 Adventure.

We have had one for 2 years now and love it. Our 2500HD handles it just fine. We have logged nearly 20,000 miles with it so far. Excellent construction quality (our TT was a Fleetwood. OYE!) and customer support that cannot be beat.
We stopped by the factory last year on a Sunday night and Rory let us camp at the factory with full hookups. Monday morning Rex got a couple of guys to address an issue we had and fixed it while we went to breakfast and Jenn even mailed us a couple of Northstar hats.
I ordered our camper with larger windows installed in the cab-over. The stock ones are just too dang small. While at the factory last year they were building one with HUGE windows in the cab-over. Real nice.
If I had it to do over again I would have ordered the LED clearance lights and maybe a rear awning but other than that I'm quite satisfied with our purchase. Our next one will be a Northstar Igloo but I will have to get a larger truck. I wouldn't want to go any bigger with just a 2500. If you have a one ton you might want to take a look at the Igloo.
Mike
Oh, and we haven't had any issues with the cabinet latches.

RE: Am I Just Naive

RV depreciation? I have never had anything depreciate as much or as quickly as my home has. I never want to own a ball and chain like this again. The value of my home has dropped nearly 80% from it's housing bubble high. My taxes have NOT dropped accordingly. Even though our house is paid off do we really own it? Just try not paying your property taxes for a while and see who REALLY owns your house.
My town is quickly becoming a ghetto with most who cannot sell going section 8. Crime is WAY up. School test scores are way down. Home values are not going up. All the while banks are keeping 70% of foreclosed homes off the market to try and bring the prices up (we have 2 on our short street that have been empty and off the market for 2 years). I cannot imagine what the REAL value of my home is. Home ownership is just not all it's cracked up to be. And I do way less maintenance on my RV than my worthless house sucks out of my life.
I say get out there and follow your dream while you can and the kids are still young. You can always go back to a stick home anytime you want. Go man, GO!

RE: Bessy has to be put down. How can I keep RVing?

Casita. Scamp. Tent. Mini van. Small pickup with a fiberglass cap. Sadly none of these options are as nice as the class C but if you really want to camp then any of these will do the job. I would have no problem going back to a tent.

RE: Green Ghetto-Way #1-Trip Report

Good stuff there. Love the desert. Keep that kid traveling. You are doing more good for him than you can imagine. Take LOTS of pictures and videos.
My daughter @ 16 has been to nearly every American state and Canadian province (which is very educational, by the way) and remembers quite a bit from when she was a toddler. My wife and I were talking recently about a trip we took when my daughter was VERY young and my daughter remembered things that happened with surprising detail. She thought she had dreamed it but still she remembered the trip.
In stark contrast, my wife is a special ed teacher in Detroit. She told me that most of her students have never seen a forest, never seen a wild animal, never seen a lake, in fact have never even seen a hill for cryin' out loud (Detroit is very flat). Most have never been 10 miles from home. To me that is devastating.
You two are great parents. Keep up the good work and keep gettin' out there.

RE: Insurance

My ex AAA agent didn't even know what a truck camper was. I had to show her a picture. She called the main office and they told her it would be $600 a year and was NOT covered when off the truck. I no longer have AAA for anything.

Nice. I could use a little sun and sand right now. Did your rear jacks scrape on any of those inclines? I noticed the white Ford with the pop up still had them on.

RE: Dodge front end situation....ugh!

The two major tire dealers in my area almost ALWAYS find a bad ball joint, tie rod, pitman arm, steering rack, wheel bearing, blah blah blah, etc. They make a lot of money on needless repairs and road hazard warranties. Take it somewhere else.

29 cents a gallon. When I first bought my daily driver I could fill the tank for $13. Now it costs over $50.

RE: Cold weather - specific to TCs

The water lines on my Northstar are on the interior except for the outside shower. I can blow out the lines and use the shut-offs to bypass the outside shower, then use my water as I normally would. The fresh tank is not exposed to the outside at all. So as long as the interior stays above freezing I'm good to go.
I also have a cassette toilet and use windshield washer fluid to flush. The only tank that is exposed to the outside is the grey tank and in hindsight I should have gotten the heated tank. Pretty easy to install an aftermarket tank heater though.
The most difficult thing I think would be finding an open dump station for your black tank if you didn't have a cassette toilet.
